Tickets to the dinner, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance and which donates proceeds to Kosair Charities, are $45 and can be purchased through Kosair Charities (502-637-7696). The Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1964 to honor athletes, coaches, officials, administrators and contributors who made significant contributions to sports in the state, is limited to either natives of Kentucky or those who made their reputations in the state. McCray is one of just four U of L players to surpass both 1,000 career points (1,247) and rebounds (1,029). A 6-7 forward/center from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., McCray helped U of L to a combined 109-26 record and three NCAA Final Four appearances in four seasons (1979-83), starting 132 consecutive games. A starter on the Cards' 1980 NCAA Championship team, McCray was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, the year the United States boycotted the Olympics. He was honored as Metro Conference Player of the Year in 1983. McCray played 10 seasons in the NBA (Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, Chicago Bulls) from 1983-93. He currently resides in Houston. McCray joins eight prominent athletic figures to be inducted in the 2002 class, including: Richie Farmer, a former Clay County High School and University of Kentucky basketball player; Alfred 'Sonny' Collins, a former University of Kentucky running back and all-time leading rusher; Patti Cooksey, a jockey who is only the second female to win at least 2,000 races; Guy Strong, a high school and college coach who led Kentucky Wesleyan to its first NCAA Division II title in 1966; Johnny Owens, a two-time state high school and two-time State Amateur golf champion; Danny Sullivan, an Indy-car race driver who won the 1985 Indianapolis 500; Maurice Moorman, an all state football player at St. Xavier High School and a standout NFL lineman; and Wes Strader, a former Western Kentucky broadcaster. The nine inductees bring the total enshrined in the Hall to 176. The rugged forward helped lead the Cardinals to a 109-26 record and three NCAA Final Four appearances during his playing years. He was selected as a member of the 1980 United States Olympic Basketball team. He is one of only four players in U of L history to surpass both the 1,000 career points and rebound marks with 1,247 points and 1,029 rebounds. McCray played for the Houston Rockets for five years before he was traded to the Sacramento Kings where he was named to the NBA All-Defensive team in 1988 and led the league in minutes played. He played for the Dallas Mavericks and ended his pro career as a member of the NBA Champion Chicago Bulls in 1992-93. He is currently a partner in a furniture gallery and a residential home builder in Houston.
Also, I will take a shot at #2 even though things may have changed since last year. I saw Allen Leavell at a Golf Tournament late last year and he was working for good ole' Mattress Mac at Gallery Furniture and playing golf in their foursome.
Did Allen ever go to jail for choking that ref? 3) Petersen is a broadcaster for the TWolves the last I saw him. 4) Buck is playing overseas in some European league 5) Steve Harris went looking for his jumpshot in the hills and was never heard from again. Actually, I have no idea what Steve's up to...
Thanks guys!!! It's good to hear that McCray and Leavell are still around these parts. Petersen's a broadcaster? Wonder if he's any good? I'll have to try and catch a T'Wolves broadcast next season. How old is Buck now? More power to him, can't believe he's still playing! Poor Steve Harris, who's call was it to draft him anyway? All his press clippings indicated a sharp-shooter but he could never get his confidence together in the league. Didn't we pass up Joe Dumars to draft this guy?
ESource,actually I saw/heard Petersen,either last year or year before,do a broadcast FOR the Rockets when one of our broadcasters missed a game up there. He filled in and did a good job providing good color,insight on the TWolves,and some reminiscing on the Rockets teams he played for.
Just going a step further, Petersen is the color commentator for the TWolves. I thought it was real cool that he would "pinch hit" for us.
