We should move him to BP.

Serious question--is there any statistical measure of consistency by position? Of course it seems like closers have brutal slumps.

Yeah, that outing last night was a tough one. A walk, an extremely weak chopper, and a weak ground ball right back to the pitcher. He didn't exactly get lit up, but nonetheless it's 2 more runs and a contribution to another loss.

That wasn't exactly a low leverage situation. They need to used him in roles where he won't hurt us and hope he can get some positive momentum to work him back into clutch situations. Still don't want him demoted, Fields is far more deserving of that honor.

2 outings ago was his lowest leverage one of the season... and he struck out 2 out of 3 in 8 pitches, one of his only 1-2-3 innings on the season. He even did a fist-pump to say "I'm back!" (which seemed entirely out of place, given that they were losing 6-2).

Then he got a pretty key out the outing after that, in a game that got close (6-4, McHugh game).

    Then last night.

I know they're trying to balance regular work (if its truly mental with a combination of bad mechanics that need to be worked out) with less leverage... but its pretty hard to plan out.

I was actually more perplexed why they didn't use Sipp to start the inning, and I would have had Giles available just in case he got in trouble... something about Giles not having to start innings, and possibly even being the one to "get them out of it" seems to be a balance of still giving him a meaningful situation, but also not having all the pressure be on him.

I also thought they could have had Harris continue on to the 9th (it was a tie game, after all). Never been a fan of the managerial reflex decision to bring the closer in to start the 9th of all tie games. It should entirely be dependent on situation and how the 8th inning guy looks.

Yeah, that was a real head scratcher: 1-1 in the 7th against the team currently in first place in a potential ball-rolling kind of game - that seems like a textbook "high leverage" situation to me.

I'd be curious how far off the reservation (if at all) Hinch was, in terms of managing Giles - that seemed like a really ghastly error on his part.

Was actually 2-1... a save situation.

One outing after bringing him into a 6-4 game with 2 on and 2 outs in the 6th.

They've really only given him one low leverage situation since the Oakland game... and he seemed to thrive in it. There's obviously not a perfect guideline/formula for getting him right again... but this is exactly one of the things managers are paid to do.

    4. Too bad Hinch isn't smart enough to realize this. If he starts showing some dominance then slowly earn his trust back in situation 3 then 2.

Giles has been beyond terrible, but last night was just one of those games. If you watched it, it wasn't nearly as bad as the box score looks. The walk was bad, but the hit he gave up was nothing. I'm not even coming close to trying to defend him, just saying it wasn't exactly like all of the other terrible outings he's had this year. I'd like to see him pitch until his damn arm falls off. I want him out there in every single low pressure situation until they get him figured out!

At this point Giles needs to go to AAA.

I am beginning to agree. I hoped a few more outings would be enough for him to figure it out. And eventually I think he will. But we cant afford the losses he is piling up for us while he does so.

    Poor Fresno.

I don't think last nights outing will instigate a AAA send down.... on paper, 2 out of his last 3 outings are positive, with last night being a pretty tough-luck appearance.

He hasn't pitched minor league ball since early 2014. This would be pretty equivalent to asking Springer to go back down when he was in the midst of his early season struggles (which some may have suggested... I know several wanted him benched... but he hit his way out of it).

At this point, criteria for appearances should be pretty clear:
    1. Big deficit or big lead
    2. 6th inning, 3+ run lead
    3. Need to bail another guy out of trouble where they need a K, mid-inning, even in a close game/possible save situation (If it truly is mental, he could thrive here).
    4. No other pitchers available/needs work.

Between those scenarios, plus more that probably aren't coming to mind, he should be able to find work... but if his mechanics are truly so far off from where they were the last two years, he needs to go somewhere else regardless.

Yeah I thought he didn't get a fair shake last night. I wanted to see him stay in and get out of it but Sipp came in and walked another then gave up a hit and yet it's Giles catching hell.

This thread and the posts in it since last night's game aren't about last night's game. There's a bigger context, obviously.

Sure... but had he gotten out of it (as he did the previous 2 outings just prior), it probably still isn't being discussed.

We aren't privy to how Giles is conducting himself in meetings with Hinch and the rest of the staff... we don't know if some of this is coming from the front office.

We do know that Hinch went from saying he'd be taken out of the 8th inning set-up man role, to putting him in a low-key situation, to back right in the thick of things in the span of just 3 games.

Last night was not tough-luck for Giles.

Besides the one flukish play, he walked somebody and the only out he recorded was one from a failed bunt.

He was bad. Was he as bad as he has been? No... but not a good outing.

Clearly my patience for Giles is far thinner than yours is right now. That's ok. I'm not interested in "IF" he got out of it. He didn't. That's been the problem. He doesn't get out of it enough to justify him being put in those innings at this point. The guy made it through 1/3 of an inning giving up 2 runs and we're talking about, "yeah..but if he got out of it...."

His ERA is approaching 10. He's a basketcase at this point. I don't know how you fix him, but I'm tired of him figuring out on the big league club and throwing away games he appears in.

At this point I think he needs to go to AAA, get his innings in and work on his issues. If Giles confidence is shot by being sent down, then he has no business pitching late in games in the big leagues.

He has had 14 games and has almost given up 2 less earned runs that all of last season in 58 more innings. He is giving up 1.5 hits per inning and is giving up a homer every 3 innings.

It is just time for him to regroup, and performances like last night, with a team that is struggling, can destroy a team.

Lol what? He walked a batter, then a weak dribbler to first (that was bad luck) then he gets the first out and is pulled. I'm telling you everything Hinch touches turns to ****. If he was left in the outcome would have probably been better than what eventually happened and his confidence would be building on top of that.

His two appearances before last night consisted of 1.1 innings. It doesn't really tell you a whole lot.
