ISIS is just as much the correct interpretation of Islam as the Lord's Resistance Army is for Christianity.
Yes. The difference is in scale and in the amount of popular support for the same goals, both in their respective region and worldwide. ISIS fights for strict Sharia law. Many, many Muslims around the world support the same goal - hundreds of millions. I think you would be hard-pressed to find even a few thousand Christians around the world who support any of the same goals the Lord's Resistance Army pursues.
Forget about what ISIS really wants, what about what women really want??? Spoiler <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-partner="tweetdeck"><p>Ladies, if a stranger on the Internet offers you Kittens and Nutella, they might be ISIS <a href="http://t.co/KeHg6aJhs0">pic.twitter.com/KeHg6aJhs0</a></p>— R Hat (@TheScudStud) <a href="https://twitter.com/TheScudStud/status/568060476531347458">February 18, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
I think the U.S. is taking the right approach towards ISIS. There's not much we can do from a military standpoint - there are no good options. And what ISIS is doing now is scaring the world - including the Muslim world. Maybe the Muslim world can finally see our perspective a bit. Maybe it's good that ISIS is as brutal and horrific as it is and be an instrument to drive change is Islam. Maybe this is the internal war Islam needs to have with itself. ISIS represents the past of Islam. As it grows and expands at somepoint more and more progressive Muslims are going to have to come to terms with that and decide what's more important to them. There is truth in that many Muslims tolerate extremism and blame the west for it. Regardless of whom you blame, when these guys are in your backyard and threatening your way of life, that's going to invoke a reaction. Good to see Egypt and Jordan unifying against these guys.
what are ISIS' "legitimate grievances?" [rquoter]Groups like al Qaeda and ISIL promote a twisted interpretation of religion that is rejected by the overwhelming majority of the world's Muslims. The world must continue to lift up the voices of Muslim clerics and scholars who teach the true peaceful nature of Islam. We can echo the testimonies of former extremists who know how terrorists betray Islam. We can help Muslim entrepreneurs and youths work with the private sector to develop social media tools to counter extremist narratives on the Internet. We know from experience that the best way to protect people, especially young people, from falling into the grip of violent extremists is the support of their family, friends, teachers and faith leaders. At this week's summit, community leaders from Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Boston will highlight innovative partnerships in their cities that are helping empower communities to protect their loved ones from extremist ideologies. More broadly, groups like al Qaeda and ISIL exploit the anger that festers when people feel that injustice and corruption leave them with no chance of improving their lives. The world has to offer today's youth something better. Governments that deny human rights play into the hands of extremists who claim that violence is the only way to achieve change. Efforts to counter violent extremism will only succeed if citizens can address legitimate grievances through the democratic process and express themselves through strong civil societies. Those efforts must be matched by economic, educational and entrepreneurial development so people have hope for a life of dignity.[/rquoter] http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-obama-terrorism-conference-20150218-story.html
He's talking about citizen grievances, not addressing ISIS-specific grievances. He believes that if people live in a free society where their voices are heard then the allure of these groups will diminish.
The article is about steering / protecting young people from joining groups such as ISIS, not about what ISIS wants, you crazy bat.
This may partly be true, but the logic "if there is democracy and enough jobs, then there won't be extremists" is wrong. There are evil ideologies which lure people no matter whether they have a job or not. The shoe bomber kid was a rich kid. There are plenty of people who become extremists regardless of economic circumstances. The root cause is the evil ideology. Economic circumstances are only a contributing factor. That's what always gets clouded by leftists who try to explain everything with their own rich vs. poor ideology.
Er... how, exactly? The author believes that they will attack those near first, and us later. How is that "debunked"?
the questions is not what ISIS wants but which nation state(s) are funding them and what do THEY want.
The rules regarding the caliphate will pretty much guarantee its destruction...eventually. How in the hell were those rules ever successful in the past? Good article.
The story goes in depth into the strategic differences between AQ and ISIS. AQ is intent on attacking the west on its soil. ISIS is operating with a different strategy in mind (Capture territory)
What i don't get is when we see these dudes parade down on the streets with their toyota tacomas , why, can't we send a drone and drop a hell fire missile and take out 100 of them? It's not like they can do anything about it. Make a video of them marching down and getting blasted and post it on YouTube
