To add to the above post, its all about value you're getting for the contract. Daniels may not have taken what Graham was offered... or maybe the Texans front office just felt that Graham was a better investment given the years/money it would take. Daniels also had an uncharacteristically healthy season, which played into their decision making. If you can save money... AND have a replacement-level player that provides the same (if not more) production, you cut that player. Some players get cut because they simply make too much and no amount of production at this point could really justify it.
If we go after Peyton, we won't have good draft picks. Pick one. A good draft, or trade the farm for Peyton? Tough.
I'd rather have player x who is a top 20% player getting paid like a top 10% player with two years left on his contract but is also familiar with the team and coaches than to have player y who is a top 50% player getting paid like a top 40% player on a new 5 year contract but has to adjust to the team and is an unknown.
This. The Texans need their drafts to produce more NFL players. This would be a greta place for Bob McNair to spend his money.
Typically, once a team acquires one of those, they tend to settle the whole team for years with coaching staffs and have the luxury of not having to "waste" any furhter draft picks or FA signings trying them out. They will now build an epic oline and/or defense and only get stronger. We will continually be playing catchup until we have a franchise player as well.
I agree with everything you said but have two questions re-the highlit bits. Jones is not good enough imo. Try Ferentz out or draft one. AJ - we may have to bite the bullett and draft one up high.
Well, Guard is different from Center, just like it's different from Tackle. Jones was drafted to be a Center, but having Myers forced him to play somewhat out of position in order to get on the field. He could be better if he moves back to his more natural position.
Spend free agent money on the defensive side of the ball. Since they pay J.J. like a quarterback they need to treat him like one and put as much talent as they can around him to try to build a dominate defense as quickly as possible. Use the draft for the offensive side of the ball and hope Mallet or Savage work out.
How much is a Reach? I think Jameis at 10 is not a reach . . maybe at 1 but not at 10 I think going into next year we need 1. Mallet at the helm - it is his make or break year 2. a decision on Savage - IF Mallet does not work out . . .we need someone reach the following year - which will be Savage's make or break year . .. next year is the CAN HE BE TAUGHT year 3. FitzPatrick - BackUp this season 4. If they not confident in Savage .. . FIND SOMEONE ELSE! Jameis . . reach if necessary Cannot miss on a Bridgewater/Carr two years in a row Once the QB situation is in place .. i think we will be ok I can see adding another TE or WR but I think a CB is a priority then a ILB Rocket River
Drafting Winston at #1 is less of a reach than drafting a pass rusher who only had 3 sacks. Winston will go #1... No way Lovie let's him out of Florida.
Mariota may be within reach for the Texans if they want him because I can see him dropping outside the top 10.
