Here's the Tracy Murray/Drexler trade with lulz quotes from Suns, and a cameo from Weinhauer https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1995-02-19-9502180335-story.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The week that follows the NBA All-Star Game often is little more than a bridge between the All-Star Game and the trading deadline. But the past week produced enough news to make it one of the more compelling of the season. The Drexler-Thorpe trade: No, we don't understand it, either - unless there is more to come. The Houston perspective is that it adds explosiveness to the offense and serves as insurance if Vernon Maxwell explodes again. But the cost of acquiring guard Clyde Drexler from the Trail Blazers appears to have been far too excessive, with the loss of power forward Otis Thorpe. That, at least, was the perspective from one of the leading Western Conference contenders poised on preventing a Rockets return to the NBA Finals. "I was kind of glad it happened, because Otis always gives us a lot of problems, with his rebounding, scoring and defense," Suns forward Dan Majerle said. "I think it hurts their defense. Clyde is not the greatest defensive player." Or, as Phoenix coach Paul Westphal said, "The Rockets did sacrifice some versatility. It's a hard trade to figure out. Both teams added something to what they already had a lot of." From the Rockets' perspective, it was time to make a move after Loy Vaught scorched Thorpe for 33 points in a Clippers victory a week ago. "This is the first time we've ever had two great players," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said.Already there may be more to come from Houston, including a deal that reportedly would send Maxwell to New Jersey for forward Jayson Williams. "We're not going to stick our nose in a book just because we made a trade," Vice President of Basketball Operations Bob Weinhauer said. "If somebody presents something that can improve our team, we're going to take a look at it. If not, we feel pretty good about what we've got." @J.R. did Weinhauer say that or Morey? --------------------------------------------------------------- [further down in the article] -- The Hornets have inquired about Rockets forward Robert Horry, with guard Dell Curry the possible bait.
Good post. I’ve posted much the same before. Thomas was behind the Moses trade, even as he was working on completing his purchase of the Rockets. I thought he was a terrible owner at the time. It was luck that gave us Sampson and Olajuwon, not the “brilliance” of Charlie Thomas, in my opinion.
Or, and it is supposedly the case in Charlotte*, owners who are content to milk profits at the cost of winning games. *and too many others.
