What 1 move do you wish Daryl Morey could have a do over on?

but in all seriousness, with a crystal ball and knowing we'd have Harden and Howard it has to be Dragic.

 

One regret that Morey mentioned: drafting Joey Dorsey over Omer Asik.

 

We'll have to wait till 2015 summer to really know if not signing him was a mistake. For one, what will we do with the cap space. For two, can Dragic sustain 3 seasons of how he's playing now?

I still think crowning Dragic as a true all star material is a bit premature at this point. Let's see how he does in the playoffs.

The other side of the Dragic coin is if he continues to play this well, he would have opted out anyways and we would have had to choose between re-upping him or letting him walk in favor of chasing Love/Aldridge/whoever. So, in hindsight, I think it's almost a wash. with the only caveat being what this team would have played like with him instead of Lin. That would also probably mean no Beverley or at least no Canaan.

 

We wouldn't have Harden or Howard with Adelman. He wanted say in the trades and free agent signings .... You see how well that is working in Minnesota.

 

That Goran decision made no sense but he turned around and got Lin at a higher price...but I guess we needed someone to sell tickets.

No, we needed someone who would accept a three year deal. Morey wants cap room next summer, and we'll have it in spades when Lin's and Asik's deals are up.

The decision to not sign Dragic can't be accurately judged until after next season.

At the time of the Lin signing, the Rockets were looking like one of the league's worst teams. They needed something, anything to generate interest. Even if most of that interest wound up being in China. It wasn't until we lucked into Harden and then signed Dwight in the span of less than a year that suddenly going with Lin over Dragic looked like a bad move in hindsight.

But 2015 will render the final verdict on that decision. If all that cap space from Lin and Asik's expiring deals leads to Kevin Love coming here, passing on Dragic will look like the smartest thing ever.

I understand why they overpaid Lin. After Yao left the revenues started drying up and the ownership needed another asian cash cow. They were banking on the cash and hoping Lin would be the player he was during Linsanity. It was a decent gamble. While Dragic is better than Lin it's not by that much. Lin can still contribute. And he sells tickets. Win/Lin.

 

People are acting like Dragic would be putting up his numbers right now if he was on the Rockets.

 

The team did plenty before the Harden trade. It was executing a strategy (mandated from an owner who wouldn't tank) to gather assets to chase an elite player while staying competitive. The Harden deal wouldn't have happened if the Rockets didn't have the assets to make it. These assets resulted from the work done by Morey in the years before. And Dwight Howard wouldn't have signed with Houston if Houston didn't have not only Harden but also a young competitive team around him.

 

And to think, we HAD James Johnson in Rio Grande, we should have called him up. He's not scared of the moment and the fact he has become a pretty good defender and has good size to play some SF and PF (in spurts) would have made him a very valuable asset for what we are trying to do.

This is where I disagree with your post. When you said Morey was not official GM, that means that trade was CLEARLY on Dawson and JVG...Morey had nothing to do with it because he was, as you stated, being shown the ropes, meaning he had no final say on what does or doesn't happen with roster changes.
