Most of the nation didn't even know that FDR was wheelchair-bound when he died during his third term. Much easier to be president then...
Despite talks of a shock and awe and many surges, the good general didn't know when to pull out of occupied territory.
Actually the press and other men were discrete on their behalf. They didn't have top tier journalists and federally appointed prosecutors whose livelihoods were based on exposing and shaming a single man and his family.
Well he really shouldn't have to quit due to the affair (although I don't understand military turpitude clauses or protocol) and politicians are allowed and somewhat obligated to critique generals, so your rage seems a little misdirected.
Even more impressive is that he served into a 4th term - apparently serving as an undead during the end there.
In between saving capitalism and democracy at home, figuring out which record-breaking genocidal madman to support abroad and reviewing expense reports for experimental atomic reactors.
Sorry to derail all of the trailer-park/Foxnews conspiracy theories, but apparently the scorned husband had been onto this for a long time, having even written a cryptic letter to the NYT on it. The FBI was called in when he said she had access to his email account. In the end, Petraeus was just another failed Republican.
Ike was thumping his driver during WWII, Kate Summersby, who "worked as a film studio extra, dabbled in photography, and eventually became a fashion model. She was married and divorced, retaining the name of her ex-husband." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_Summersby We still pulled off D-Day and defeated the Nazis. Eisenhower was a multitasker.
Ike was a great man in every sense of the word. He even came to understand the complete depravity of the warmongering Republican Party. His own first career. His own political party. Now THAT is a revelation.
I remember when Paula Broadwell did her book interview on the Daily Show. The access she had to General Petraeus seem 'extraordinary', and she was smoking hot. It should have been obvious with the small exception of her husband being there. !!!! <table style='font:11px arial; color:#333; background-color:#f5f5f5' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='512' height='340'><tbody><tr style='background-color:#e5e5e5' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com'>The Daily Show with Jon Stewart</a></td><td style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; text-align:right; font-weight:bold;'>Mon - Thurs 11p / 10c</td></tr><tr style='height:14px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:2px 1px 0px 5px;' colspan='2'><a target='_blank' style='color:#333; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-january-25-2012/exclusive---push-up-contest-to-benefit-wounded-veterans'>Exclusive - Push-up Contest to Benefit Wounded Veterans</a></td></tr><tr style='height:14px; background-color:#353535' valign='middle'><td colspan='2' style='padding:2px 5px 0px 5px; width:512px; overflow:hidden; text-align:right'><a target='_blank' style='color:#96deff; text-decoration:none; font-weight:bold;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/'>www.thedailyshow.com</a></td></tr><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><embed style='display:block' src='http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:cms:item:comedycentral.com:406878' width='512' height='288' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='window' allowFullscreen='true' flashvars='autoPlay=false' allowscriptaccess='always' allownetworking='all' bgcolor='#000000'></embed></td></tr><tr style='height:18px;' valign='middle'><td style='padding:0px;' colspan='2'><table style='margin:0px; text-align:center' cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' width='100%' height='100%'><tr valign='middle'><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.thedailyshow.com/full-episodes/'>Daily Show Full Episodes</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.indecisionforever.com/'>Political Humor & Satire Blog</a></td><td style='padding:3px; width:33%;'><a target='_blank' style='font:10px arial; color:#333; text-decoration:none;' href='http://www.facebook.com/thedailyshow'>The Daily Show on Facebook</a></td></tr></table></td></tr></tbody></table>
So, what about Petraeus was actually Republican, and what did he fail at? Still, this was a damn shame that he has to resign over something like this, but it's an unacceptable security risk for the Director of the CIA. Those guys will go over your personal life with a razor in order to make sure you don't betray your country.
From the ethicist in the nytimes, july 13. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/15/magazine/a-message-from-beyond.html?_r=0 -- My wife's lover My wife is having an affair with a government executive. His role is to manage a project whose progress is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership. (This might seem hyperbolic, but it is not an exaggeration.) I have met with him on several occasions, and he has been gracious. (I doubt if he is aware of my knowledge.) I have watched the affair intensify over the last year, and I have also benefited from his generosity. He is engaged in work that I am passionate about and is absolutely the right person for the job. I strongly feel that exposing the affair will create a major distraction that would adversely impact the success of an important effort. My issue: Should I acknowledge this affair and finally force closure? Should I suffer in silence for the next year or two for a project I feel must succeed? Should I be “true to my heart” and walk away from the entire miserable situation and put the episode behind me? NAME WITHHELD Don’t expose the affair in any high-profile way. It would be different if this man’s project was promoting some (contextually hypocritical) family-values platform, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The only motive for exposing the relationship would be to humiliate him and your wife, and that’s never a good reason for doing anything. This is between you and your spouse. You should tell her you want to separate, just as you would if she were sleeping with the mailman. The idea of “suffering in silence” for the good of the project is illogical. How would the quiet divorce of this man’s mistress hurt an international leadership initiative? He’d probably be relieved. The fact that you’re willing to accept your wife’s infidelity for some greater political good is beyond honorable. In fact, it’s so over-the-top honorable that I’m not sure I believe your motives are real. Part of me wonders why you’re even posing this question, particularly in a column that is printed in The New York Times. Your dilemma is intriguing, but I don’t see how it’s ambiguous. Your wife is having an affair with a person you happen to respect. Why would that last detail change the way you respond to her cheating? Do you admire this man so much that you haven’t asked your wife why she keeps having sex with him? I halfway suspect you’re writing this letter because you want specific people to read this column and deduce who is involved and what’s really going on behind closed doors (without actually addressing the conflict in person). That’s not ethical, either.
Yep, the man who has information about four Americans killed in Libya resigns on the eve of his sworn congressional testimony. Nothing to see here. Total coincidence. Anyone skeptical is a conspiracy theorist.
