Maybe you should discuss the stark lack of similar rules in place for defensive players. Brian Cushing says, "Hello!"

Bruce Smith? Howie Long? Those two are usually regarded as the best 304 DEs now. Watt's 3+ seasons is better than their first 3+ seasons. But JJ still needs to keep it together for a few more years.

Bruce Smith was a 3-4 DE and probably the GOAT.

But at this pace, Watt will surpass him in a few more years.

I've been saying this for a year now, JJ Watt is the best defensive player I have ever seen.... He is on a completely different level than anyone in the game today and I'm not even sure some of the all timers are in his class.

If he can play for another ten years he will be the GOAT by default

Both were coached by Wade Phillips and Wade gave the edge to JJ... in his second year!

Yeah. I agree with you. I don't like people injuring other people, either, and Slausson got fined for it. You don't remember? Refs didn't see it when it happened, so there was no flag.

I remember that was during training camp after his rookie season. Pundits weren't even taking Phillips seriously when he said that. Then Watt proceeded to win DPOY.

How refreshing (and rare..) is it to see a player actually step it up after signing a big contract instead of the opposite?

Usually, a big contract is the beginning of the end for a player's production.

Cowherd is an idiot, and is wrong in this instance, as he usually is.

But to be fair, he basically said he doesn't believe ANY defensive player is worth $100 million, and that he thinks JJ is a great player, great citizen, and would love to have him on his team.

I agree that if he continues playing like he is now for a few more years, JJ will surpass them all but let's not forget that Bruce Smith had 19 sacks and 100 tackles in the same season. He also had 4 forced fumbles that year.

Watt is unimpressed, he could get 100 tackles if they didn't run away from him on every play

JJ Watt 2012: 21.5 sacks, 16 passes defended 81 tackles, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries

The difference between what he could get and what he gets is the difference between how good he could be and how good he will be.

no thats why we have PFF, they can take into account what he does when he isn't just making the tackle or the sack... just because he doesn't make the tackle doesn't mean he isn't making the difference.

Yes but can you compare to PFF grades for players that played 20 years ago?

Watt had two qb sacks that would have counted a couple years ago taken away (robbed) from him this past Sunday. So his full greatness will not be recognized in todays game, hes hancuffed. In the past it was Katy bar the door, not anymore. Just a shame!

    When Clowney comes back.

It's going to be a nasty pass rush.
