I wouldn't take Mack over Clowney, sure he has a lot of sacks this year, but he's not double teamed very often at all. He just doesn't command that much respect from defenses. I have seen a few plays where he does draw the double team and he might as well not even be on the field when that happens. Clowney in what is essentially his rookie season, coming off injury, and a full 2 years younger than Mack, already commands more attention. from defenses. Talking up Mack is just a knee-jerk reaction.
Any 3-4 team in the league would take Mack over Clowney now purely based on durability questions. Can Clowney end up becoming a better player than Mack? Sure. He's not there yet though and Mack hasn't missed a game.
If you have enough players to eat up double teams so that Mack can never have to face one, then he's awesome. He'd be really good on the Texans with Clowney and Watt constantly commanding those double teams. He could exploit the lack of attention by defenses just like he has so far in his career. That said, who is more valuable, the guys that defenses fear, or the guys that can take advantage of defenses basically ignoring them?
Dude this thread is about Blake Bortles. I never once mentioned clowney. But you are so butt hurt about clowney's greatness you have to litter any thread about any player in that draft with how clowney is astronomically great. Really?
Definitely. The QB position is as important as ever. If he continues to improve then the Jags will be set up for a long time.
Of course he was. Don't underestimate Amari Coopers role in Carr looking amazing. Bortles Mack Teddy Donald Carr Martin Benjamin Beckham Evans Watkins Freeman Mosely If we redid the draft would Clowney be a top 10 pick? Guessing no. Would rather have Bortles, Carr, Teddy, Sammy, Mack, or Beckham right now.
Mack is a flat out beast. Anyone thinks differently is insane. Knowing what they know now if Rick could hit the restart button there is no way in hell he takes Clowney #1
Pretty much reaffirmed by observation that he's accumulated most of his stats when playing from behind... a facet that is partly caused by his mistakes in the first place. Bortles inability to do absolutely anything of note against the Texans defense today had more to do with their early deficit (and ultimate loss) than their poorly ranked defense did.
I don't blame Bortles much for today. The picks were bad, but his offensive line was a total failure. Zero time to throw. Watt and Mercilus were abusing them all day long.
It's hard to throw 35 tds and 4000 yards in under any circumstance. Bortles is gonna be alright, today notwithstanding.
So your opinions were confirmed by watching the last game of the season where the Jaguars, on the road with nothing to play for, were sacked 8 times and rushed for 32 yards? Nice job Nick.
Huh? They've been doing this all year. They get down big, they're forced to throw a ton, and he gets some pretty big passing numbers out of it. Today's performance was just as crappy as the first time they played the Texans... When I guess they had more to play for. He's still gotta work on recognizing blitzes, getting the ball out quicker and not forcing it into triple coverage. He's not a great QB (yet) simply because he has amazing cumulative stats... There's some severe context there. He is, on the other hand, a very productive fantasy QB.
Schaub haters seemed to find all sorts of reasons to downplay his 4800 yard passing seasons with around 30 td's. He's still better than anything the Texans have right now... But I also don't know how rare a guy like Bortles really is (i.e. - if the Texans actually make a strong effort to get a QB, could they get somebody with the same skills as Bortles?... Probably).
Certainly - but there are lots of bad teams in the NFL, and none of their QBs ever post 35 TDs. Also true - but no one is comparing his numbers with previous eras. They are being compared with his contemporaries that also have inflated passing numbers. The question was not whether he is some type of elite QB - no one here has suggested that. A 2nd year QB isn't expected to be and should be making lots of mistakes. It was whether he's been worth a top 5 pick.
Bortle's numbers this year: WHEN WINNING: 33/59, 319 yards, 55.9%, 5.41 ypa, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, 74.0 rating WHEN TIED: 64/119, 681 yards, 53.8%, 5.72 ypa, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 79.2 rating WHEN TRAILING: 258/428, 3,428 yards, 60.3%, 8.01 ypa, 29 TDs, 16 INTs, 92.7 rating
