Not at all surprising. I've been saying it for weeks - there's nothing at all unreasonable about Wandy's contract, relative to his production. Teams would have no problems taking it in a heartbeat. They just want to give up less talent in return (or the Astros to throw major cash in the deal, as Wade has a history of agreeing to do), so rival GMs have thrown around the "contract too big" nonsense to the likes of Jon Heyman, who accept everything without questioning the motives.

Problem is all the big spenders are in the AL and you have to wonder what kind of success Wandy could have in that league since he has pitched in the NL his whole career. I think that is a fair concern and given his contract and probably what kind of prospects it would take, I would pass if I were a GM.

Will the Astros pull him back if they can't agree to a trade?

Probably unless Jim Crane wants a straight salary dump him and let's the team have him for nothing. That team would be responsible for rest of his contract. Jays did that a few years ago with Alex Rios and turned out to be a brillant move for them.

Everybody called the White Sox idiots when they made that move. The Blue Jays weren't brilliant, the White Sox were stupid, though they looked smart last year when he had a great first half.

Yeah Jays could have just held on to him and not let the Sox have him so it was a smart move. . Rios was a good player but not worth the contract he was getting paid so the Jays did the smart thing and dumped him.

It would be like having somebody claim Carlos Lee circa 2009.

Early speculation among rival teams is that WASH is the team that placed claim on Wandy Rodriguez; they need a veteran SP for '12 rotation. Buster Onley

A vested player option of $14MM for a 35-year old pitcher is pretty steep. Plus, I wonder... if you claim him, and the Atros don't pull him back or negotiate a trade... does the option kick-in? I've read it only happens if he's traded. Interesting....
