Working on a computer for someone that had a search hijack virus. I've removed the virus as far as I can tell but it does not resolve google.com or Bing.com. I replaced the host file with one from my PC but no luck. I can ping Google IP but not google.com I'm out of ideas. Anyone had this before?
Can you resolve any IP? If not you are have an issue with your DNS settings. Set your DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and see if it solves your problems.
I've tried a bunch of random websites, it seems to be limited to Google.com and Bing.com. Yahoo.com resolves, but search.yahoo.com doesn't.
i got one when i first discovered first row sports and went to that whorehouse without protection. thought I was really going to watch in hd! I solved it by running spybot after someone recommend it in a thread here.
As Scionxa noted, check to make sure there are no proxies. If Malwarebytes doesn't pick it up, I typically jump to finding rootkits.
I had this and tried all of the malware and virus programs and they didn't help. The problem ended up being a browser extension in both Chrome and Firefox. Just checked the extensions, found two that I knew nothing about, deleted them, and haven't had any problems since.
could also try: command prompt ipconfig/flushdns I think it gets flushed when you reboot... not 100% sure. I'm sure you've tried turning it off and on again but I bet it's a browser add-on or proxy Also, this is another reason ssd's kick so much ass... A mirrored backup install to an ssd can be really quick. I often find it's faster to do that than to trouble shoot and hope I didn't miss a root kit. I don't have a crap-ton of programs installed though, there is a point of diminishing return. If you do end up doing a fresh install, don't forget about http://www.ninite.com
Do the thing where you restore your computer to an earlier date and time. There will probably be a point a few days ago that it can use.
What you can also do to further this is go to Internet Options->Advanced->Reset. You can choose delete personal data or not. This usually works if you have problems with anything IE related.
