VirtualBox is a free, open source option. It's a very mature product too.

I'm not sure if VMWare Workstation is free or not but I know for sure that Microsoft's Virtual PC is free. You can't go wrong either way.

VMware Server 2 is free, you just have to register and recieve your keys. If you're will to go to the linux side, there's KVM, XenServer, OpenVZ and as stated before VirtualBox is multiplatform. Microsoft Virtualization works, but its not as great as the others mentioned.

For your use, go with VMware server 2.0, it will run almost all windows and linux machines.

Yes, I'm a weirdo that pays for software. :)

Try one of the free ones. Check out the VirtualBox that professorjay recommended. I haven't used it, but I've read people running Windows 7 on it. You can run it on multiple platforms, too. And it's..... free. :D
