That 5lbs dumbbell is to strengthen the Infraspinatus,Supraspinatus and Teres minor muscle for Yao's shoulder,no need for heavy weights when you do that kind of lift.

Yao always looks so uncomfortable around fans and the cheerleaders. But when around players he knows he acts more smooth. Can't wait for this guy to get back on the court.

It's to improve his grip, catching the ball, and prevent him from being stripped. Jordan Hill could really benefit from doing the same work, as his hands aren't very good.

# Other than practicing his shooting, there are some other training waiting for him. Thibodeau takes out 2 full baskets of tennis balls. This is to train Yao Ming's ability to catch the tennis balls. This is not a practice strange to Yao Ming, as Thibodeau has started to use this method to train Yao Ming while he was sitting out for 21 games for his recuperation this season.
# "We watched alot of my videos. They discovered that I was not too good in catching the basketball. Either I cannot catch and hold the ball firm, or the ball got stripped from my hand easily. This had adversely caused more turnovers and lowered my efficiency. But those two abilities are all-important to a low post player. Therefore Thibodeau used this method to train me. Just think about it. If I can catch a tennis ball hard and firm, then do you think I cannot do the same with a much bigger basketball ?"
# So during those days of Yao Ming's recuperation period, people can see such scene everyday: Thibodeau and Falsone stood 10 to 15 meters away from Yao Ming with 2 big basket of tennis balls in front of them. They would take a tennis ball one by one from the basket, and throw it at Yao Ming with the malice and ferocity like a baseball pitcher. Yao Ming had to strive to catch the tennis ball, and placed it back into an empty basket in front of him. There were a total of 100 tennis balls in those baskets of Thibodeau and Falsone. One of such pitch-and-catch session lasts for 50 tennis balls, and every time, there would be 4 ~ 5 of such sessions.
# Now, compared to that time, firstly, Falsone is not around, and Thibodeau is the lone pitcher; secondly Yao Ming cannot stand but sit on the wheelchair to catch the tennis ball. thirdly, the number of throws has significantly reduced. As a matter of fact, Yao Ming can now catch the tennis ball easily. "The tennis ball is so small and I never did that before. So initially, I could barely catch 10 out of 50. But then after 2 to 3 days, I can catch 20. Then another 2 to 3 days later, I can catch 30. More and more tennis balls into the barrel, and less and less tennis balls on the ground. Finally I can now catch at least 45 out of 50."
# "Now I can really catch and hold the ball much better than before. I think I can now not only catch tennis balls but eggs too. Well, you cannot break a tennis ball but you may break an egg. But I guess I can catch at least 3 or 4 eggs out of 10 easily."
# So right after he returned from his injury which caused him to miss 21 games in the regular season, Yao Ming improved a great deal in catching the ball, and his turnovers signifcantly reduced. He can now catch the basketball fast and firm, and can then turnaround to score from a jumper or break away from a double team and therefore the outbreak right after the All Stars break. "Now I know how to catch those tennis balls. I am now doing it just for practice. It becomes to me just a piece of cake."
