AOF? Great to see his highlights specifically. Omer Asik is so good, especially crazy rebounding in last 7 games. Good to see him getting some more blocked shots as well, probably gaining more confidence as he continues to get more experience. Would wonder if he can ever get his free throw shooting consistent.

I think I'd be fine with us moving any other player besides Asik and Harden.

It's not just the rebounds ... it's the very quick turn and pass off to Lin or Harden once he catches the rebound that puts us in transition just a second earlier than the defense is set that makes all the difference.

I'd take Asik ahead of Noah.

Yes, Noah is much more well-rounded than Asik, better passer & scorer, and higher FT%, and can play 40min a night ...

But Asik is elite defensively and on the boards in a way that surpasses what he gives up to Noah in the other areas.

And cheaper too!

Asik is already a top 5 center in the NBA though. Asik is a mean passer, mean screen setter and a better defender/ rebounder than the reigning DPOY.

I was looking at the trade thread last night and Asik is in a lot of them. I do not understand how or why any would want to trade him. He is on the cheap. He might not be a great offensive player but we have those.

Best part about Asik is he is 26 and still developing as a center. He is elite in 2/3 most valuable traits in his position (rebounding, defensive presence) and is on an underpaid contract to boot. His game will become more refined as he improves his free throw shooting and touch around the basket.

With his numbers, Omer Asik is immensely productive and has really earned the starting center position.

Daryl Morey could up the ante though by trying to find another weak side shot blocker who could team up with Omer Asik. It would be impossible to duplicate the Twin Towers Olajuwon and Sampson but adding another shot blocker, would in my opinion, make the Rockets advance farther than the first round if they make the playoffs.

Asik plus another shot blocker would make the Rockets tougher defensively.

This is all great and all....but am I the only one who finds it a bit odd that getting a rebound is now a highlight?

Here are some of Asik's most noticeable improvement in the last 10 to 15 games as compared with early season:

On the defensive end, he is getting about the same number of rebounds, but with more ease due to better positioning. After about 20 games or so into this season, I was thinking it's time that he inproved his offense, and he did.

On the offensive end, he is showing:
1) more put backs and tip ins
2) more dunks, so less of his layups getting blocked
3) more reliable catching of bounce passes from Lin and everyone else, much less butter on his fingers, thus also reducing Lin's TO average.
4) more offensive rebounding. As his average in the last dozen games went up, most of the increase were on the offensive end;
5) much less turnovers made in trying to pass off as quick as he could to Lin after catching a rebound, and no more direct passing to his teammates running to the basket at the other end
6) more of an offensive weapon. He could just focused on dominating the board when we didn't need his scoring like in the Jazz and Warriors games, but we our 3's were not falling, he could become an immediate scoring option.

Asik is definitely one of the most improved players of the league. Hope he can get his MIP of the year award.

His rebounding deserves to be highlighted. He is elite at it.

I think he's doing a good job and I have no doubt that he will keep improving.

By the way, I agree with Clyde, the guys should refrain from bounce pass to Asik.

Actually you're a little bit right. But this is a personal highlights for Asik and he is a center.

So that should not be odd to add rebounds in his highlights.

Ideally, we would team him with a weak side shot blocker that was at least an average rebounder, with an all-round offensive game ranging from PnR to being a stretch 4 that can shoot around 38% from 3s.

Unfortunately, those don't exist. Even Kevin Love doesn't satisfy. Nor Lamarcus Aldridge.

I think the better alternative is to find a mini-Asik that can do 80% of what Asik does in a reserve role going against lesser centers. That is, defend, protect the rim, handle PnR defense, rebound at a crazy rate (and pass immediately after the rebound to ignite our transition offense), and be able to finish decent at the rim and covert around 60% from the FT line.

And try to fill out PF position with a versatile two-way near-star player on a cheaper salary of $10M/yr (like a Millsap) so we can basically play the same way we do now, except not have a big drop-off when Asik sits for 15 min per game.

Millsap/Patterson gives us a pretty damn good PF rotation, especially with a rim protector behind them at all times. Parsons/Harden/Delfino is a great 2/3 rotation, but we'd probably need a taller defender that can adequately shoot spot-up 3s in matchups in difficult for Delfino due to height. Perhaps, we may just move Morris back to playing SF for that role.

Then, of course, the ultimate back-up PG/combo PG for the Rockets would be Llull. Great transition, good defense, good shooter, can play both PG and SG, and can create/run a team sufficiently as a back-up. Consider him having the combined positives of Douglas and Beverley on offense (not a crazy athlete like Beverley but much better than Douglas), and defensively still decent.

That defensive center may just be on our RGV roster. No ... it's not Tim Olbrecht. The veteran alternative could be Samuel Dalembert.
