    Hey folks,

I got tapped to learn how to do some video editing. Respecting my BBS bretheren, I thought I'd ask you guys for advise.

Which software should I invest in? I'm not doing anything spectacular, just stuff for our company's website.

I'm looking to spend $300-$500...or less.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Adobe Premiere. It's pretty good and I found it fairly easy to use the first time around.

    LOL...not my money.

I did some research and used the search function here after I started the thread (maybe I got this process backwards) and found Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas listed a lot.

Anymore suggestions for a first timer would still be appreciated.

wow, I'm at their site now...seems you can get by spending less than $100.

In fact they have 2 products under $100.

    Thanks for the vote.

    (still researching)

Hmm, maybe I should look into using Vegas as well. I always thought Premiere was the preferred choice. Meh, what do I know? :p

When you transfer movies from your camcorder to you computer does it take up a buttload of space, or is it just me?

I use Vegas Pro 8.0 but, I'm pretty sure it's more than $100 bucks. (if you actually pay for it)

Are you on a pc or mac? I find finalcut as the easy to use and most versatile editing software.

RocketRaccoon, if you don't mind getting it for free. There's a youtube channel I downloaded from and got it (Adobe Premiere CS3) for free. It's about 730 MB large.

Windows Movie Maker - low quality, not too much editing, not too many exporting options
Vegas Video - steep learning curve, needs fast processor and memory
ULead's family of video-editing software (uLead VideoStudio is NEW) - limited edits, high quality exporting, low learning curve, looks professional

I forget what I've used lately, but there are tons of programs out there. You seem to have plenty of greens to shed, so take Vegas and run with it. You run with it, mister.
It has to do with the imported video's DIMENSIONS (here we are talking about sizes again  ) and quality. Your importing program should have a way to help you determine what's best. Of course, if you want higher quality and wanting to put the video onto a DVD, by all means import as large as you CAN have. Here we are talking about buttloads, again.

I use Sony Vegas for all the Rockets mixes I make, so I'm sure it would be more than enough if you're sticking to the basics. I've never used Adobe Premier, and therefore would only suggest it for someone who is looking to do editing as part of a career. It's an industry standard for PC while Vegas is not.

I'm using pinnacle studio. It's working really well... I bought it because I had problems with Movie Maker.

I connect my camcorder to a TV tuner card in my PC, then use uLead Video Studio 11 to capture the video. The video is captured in uncompressed avi format, which makes the file size really large. After capturing the video, I encoded it into XVID format, which decreases the file size significantly.

    Thank you very much everybody.

I'm heading out now to buy Vegas now. If I find video editing is my thing or Vegas is limited to what I'm imagining doing, maybe I'll give Adobe a shout.

    Again, thanks.

    :D
