The thoughts reported on the first day of practice. Remember it's just 1 day. http://www.hookem.com/2016/03/07/observations-from-first-day-of-spring-practice/ Interesting note about Chris Warren. He's 23 pounds heavier than last year. He was the freshman who came in at the end of the year and just threw everyone around like rag dolls. Dude broke 7 tackles for a TD run and he's over 20 lbs heavier. Not sure if that is good or bad. Warren isn’t the team’s biggest weight gainer. That honor is a tie between defensive end Charles Omenihu (262 pounds) and offensive lineman Garrett Thomas (300), each of whom jumped 26 pounds. I think these are the QBs minus Merrick. Locksley is definitely the 1st one.
^ so basically the exact same trainwreck of a QB situation as last year? Hope that someone improves? How has Charlie not found someone willing to be consistently competent here, even if not an all-american? As an aside, I saw Charlie Strong at a restaurant here in Austin on Sunday. Like Buechele (apparently, judging by the picture), Charlie is not a big dude.
I went to the Spring game last year, I thought both QBs sucked. Hopefully the Spring game this year will show a different trend
Heard injured his throwing shoulder. They don't know how serious it is but you can assume he'll sit out the rest of spring. Gilbert has said a lot without saying anything about the QBs. Some of the guys on radio in Austin said Buechele looked ok. It's very close to the offense he had in High School so he made fast reads and good throws. Again though, he's just small. He needs to gain 15-20lbs. You hear that every time someone talks about watching him play. it's just jarring. Swoops is taking 1st team snaps and Buechele will move up to 2nd. Sounds like the defense is looking really good. Gilbert Comments Summary of nothing: Swoops: See what his strengths are and gear plays toward that. He's big, has live arm, has great leadership qualities, players respect him Buechele: Carries himself well, High football IQ, Competitive, urgent with what he does, room for improvement Heard: Lot of speed, experience, good release, knows how to win (high school championships), spins the ball well <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7w3wpm_nN5o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
OU already trying to get to Charlie for 2017 recruiting class. Should Charlie Strong Worry About Oklahoma's Latest Recruiting Success in Texas?
Rumors around that Kai Locksley is going to transfer but he has denied it. Someone is going to transfer when you have 5 scholarship QBs. He's looking at playing behind Buechele who has the same amount of eligibility. If he stays then it'll likely be a position change. http://www.burntorangenation.com/2016/3/30/11329572/kai-locksley-texas-longhorns-position-change Spoiler Freshman Collin Johnson: <iframe src="https://vine.co/v/iDVQrq57Wre/embed/simple" width="600" height="600" frameborder="0"></iframe><script src="https://platform.vine.co/static/scripts/embed.js"></script>
Read that Locksley was or still in the dog house. Whatever it is, he now has a legitimate chance to get some snaps with Heard out. A Burt, Locksley, Collins WR set would be salty if a change is made though.
The problem with your salty WR set is the same problem that's plagued the program for the past 4-5 years - nobody to get them the ball. Tyrone is awful, Heard is hurt, and the rest are inexperienced.
Heard's future, Buechele's hot start, 2016 wins http://texas.247sports.com/Article/...onghorns-Jerrod-Heard-Shane-Buechele-44698989 Strong on Buechele: 'I would not be afraid to start him at all' http://texas.247sports.com/Bolt/Str...ld-not-be-afraid-to-start-him-at-all-44684847
Said a while back that if someone doesn't run away with the starting job, think Strong will start Swoopes. Kinda sounds like things could trend that way especially with Heard getting hurt and not really progressing like most hoped. Shane adding another 10 or so pounds this summer would be a big shot in the arm though. I know Colt started around the same weight that Shane is currently but he also played behind a stud veteran line. On a side notes, the ND game has been moved to Sunday the 4th.
Is anyone else keeping up with what is going on at Baylor? Senior Shawn Oakman is accused of raping a girl last weekend. This follows former players Tevin Elliot and Sam Ukwuachu being convicted for sexual assaults. All 3 players were transfers from other universities. There are lawsuits alleging that the Baylor program knew about the multiple allegations against Oakman and didn't do anything until the police intervened. The university has been accused of turning away women who came to them seeking help for assault. If the charges against Oakman turn out to be true then it will be the 8th rape by a Baylor football player (mostly Elliot). This blows my mind. http://deadspin.com/lawsuit-baylor-t...nvo-1768264150 Lawsuit: https://www.scribd.com/doc/306548127...tle-IX-Lawsuit Allegations against Oakman http://collegesports.blog.statesman...player-is-being-investigated-on-rape-charges/
Back on the UT Front: Strong: Texas' Swoopes is a 'totally different' QB this spring http://texas.247sports.com/Bolt/Strong-Texas-Swoopes-is-a-totally-different-QB-this-spring-44718866
Tyrone Swoopes looking good... Not saying he hasn't looked good, or that they are outright lying, but I've seen enough of Swoopes to have no confidence whatsoever that he's actually gonna be a decent QB this year. I take this more as a sign that that nobody has actually looked good, and he's looked the least bad. It's bad news disguised as good news.
I am really interested in seeing what an OC (who actually has a plan) can do though. Watson was garbage and felt Norvell abandoned the game plan too early. If the OL improves and Warren/Foreman can be an effective 1-2 punch, think the offense should be much better regardless of who is QB. But really the team will only go as far as the defense takes them IMO. So much focus on the offense yet we had one of the worst defenses in the history of the program. Any resemblance of a defense last season probably nets us wins over Cal, OK St., and Tech.
Adjusted for strength of opponents, it was 23rd overall in efficiency last year. That is a serious drop off from 2014 (11th), but not as bad as 2012 (38th). THat's what happens when you play in the top ranked offensive conference (and when your offense frequently sets up easy scores for the other team).
