OK, this is getting downright weird. Must be because Friday is Halloween. Morey quoting Rudy T's "heart of a champion" speech strikes me as a bit on the desperate side - he's been awfully sensitive after his off season sort of blew up in his face. If memory serves, Rudy T made that pronouncement AFTER winning his 2nd NBA title which is something Morey hasn't come close to sniffing in his (now) year eight as GM. There are legitimate reasons why the Rockets aren't favored to win the NBA Championship and folks underestimating them is definitely NOT one of them.
There are still people who say that Morey's revolving door roster is just what any good GM does trying to improve the team. This quote from an agent just shows that it not true:
How does it show that? They are transaction oriented right now, as is any team trying to make changes.
I would recommend going public with a 3 year plan of making the Finals and a 5-8 yr plan of at least winning a title. No random sacking of the coach. (If a coach is fired replace him with an assistant or someone who is familiar with the system) People around here are getting easily satisfied reaching 2nd rounds and WC finals. When those plans fail then consider making more drastic changes.
Don't you think the way he said "transaction oriented" meant one kind of approach to team building? You really think that he would use a term like that if it was just what any team was doing? It's like saying, "JVG's coaching is defense oriented" and it's no different from what any coach does who wants to win. If it's no different, what 's the point of saying that his coaching is "defense oriented"? It's a special kind of approach. Whether it is good or bad is another story. To say that what Morey does is no different from any other good GM is just false.
He is doing broadcasting now, right? I bet that's only for a season or two. That guy is going to be a great coach one day. I could see him returning to college or even coaching high school. He could coach in the NBA, much better than Derek Fisher. But Battier is such a great guy, gives to his community and such, that I could see him stepping back to coach at a much lower level. Wherever/whenever he decides to coach -- he's going to be great.
