A heads up for all futbol fans, Bruce Arena will name the 23 man roster for the World Cup today at 5:00 CT live on Sportscenter. There shouldn't be too many surprises with really only two spots up for grabs. The final defender spot will likely go to either Greg Berhalter, Chris Albright, Todd Dunivant or Heath Pearce, while the final midfield place will go to Pat Noonan, Kerry Zavaganin or Ben Olsen.
THIRTY-freaking-EIGHT DAYS, brothers. Anyone read the Arenas article in last week's Sports Illustrated? I was surprised when I heard he was a goalkeeper. Awwwww... just like ME. Players Await Call
The TV (I think it's Gatorade) ad where the play "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" and show the US team getting yelled at and playing in a downpour is great. I can't wait for it to get going.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bc1UbF3pcDQ&search=Gatorade%20Soccer The shot of them in the locker room with the roof bouncing is great. Can you imaging being in a place like that. One thing that's good is that we actually have enough quality players to debate who makes the roster and who starts. The US team has come a long way in the past 10 years.
I never got into the World Cup until the 1994 one (when Brazil beat Italy), but I have been hooked ever since. I was on vacation in Florida during the 1998 World Cup and barely made it out of my hotel room to the beach. I remember seeing a shot on television of Mick Jagger praying in the stands during the England/Germany game when England was making a penalty kick.
Yeah, they usually make the fat kid goalkeeper. Of course, I can't really talk, because I played fullback, where they put the uncoordinated kids that can't dribble the ball down the field.
I think it will be Berhalter, Olsen, and Twellman for the last spots. I wish Wolff wouldn't make the team since he has done exactly nothing on the international level, but it appears as though he will make it.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/soc/3833675.html I wonder if these guys are watching the same games... they disagreed only on a few things, but the main one that interested me was Brian Ching(ao)
Ummmm....did you watch the 2002 WC? Who do you think set up McBride's goal against Mexico in the elimination stage? Just ask Swoly . He also had a wicked shot on goal in the same game. I do agree that his career hasn't been "stellar" but he can create opportunities.
I think Ching should make it for one reason. McBride's back up. If McBride goes down, Ching gives the US another large target for set pieces. Wolff and Twellman are relatively small and not as good in the air. The fowards should be Eddie Johnson, McBride, Twellman, and Ching.
Twellman always seemed pretty good in the air to me. But I agree that Ching should go before him simply because he's bigger and more dangerous on set peices. And neither of them have really shown much while playing with the US but have had success in MLS so it's tough to say one is superior to the other. If Ching doesn't make the roster he'll be the first alternate forward, so he'll still have a chance to go.
