UN official urges U.S. to challenge Colorado, Washington mar1juana laws

VIENNA — The head of the U.N. drug watchdog agency is urging U.S. federal officials to challenge ballot measures in Colorado and Washington that decriminalized possession of small amounts of mar1juana for adults 21 and over.

Raymond Yans says the approvals send "a wrong message to the rest of the nation and it sends a wrong message abroad."

Yans heads the International Narcotics Control Board. He told The Associated Press on Tuesday he hopes Attorney General Eric Holder "will take all the necessary measures" to ensure that mar1juana possession and use remains illegal throughout the U.S.

Both states are holding off on plans to regulate and tax the drug while waiting to see whether the Justice Department will assert federal authority over drug law.

The INCB has no enforcement ability.

How so? All the guy is suggesting is that the US enforce its federal laws, which legally take precedence over state laws.

Absolutely - that's up to the Feds. The UN guy is making his preference known. So I was asking how that indicates that he doesn't understand the idea of democracy?

    Supremacy Clause.
Not to say that I think prohibition of something like mar1juana is a good; its not... but if the feds absolutely wanted to they have the precedent to overturn those rulings.

One could argue that not a single citizen voted for the federal prohibition, while the voters of those states voted to decriminalize. Yes, elected representatives put the federal prohibition in.

That demonstrates the difference between a democracy (like Greece) and a Republic (like Rome).

The title would be more accurate if it was:

"Head of International Narcotics Control Board Urges Feds To Save His Job, Take a Huge Dump on the People of Colorado and Washington"

There is no bigger failure of a war than the war on drugs. Can't wait til all the brainwashed Nixonites finally die off.

This. And **** the UN. If they weren't a load of pansies they'd have already sanctioned us for our aggressive foreign policy.

Except for the little problem that the US has veto power over any sanctions...

America's always been the latter, especially since judicial review has been held so prominently in high regard.

Example of this is something like Romer v. Evans where the Supreme Court struck down a referendum-approved constitutional amendment.

I think a lot of people live under the impression that it is "the people" who decide their fates, and the closer that decision is made by "the people" rather than their proxies, the better it is. That is clearly however, not how America operates.

In this case, it is rather unfortunate.
