Faced with the problem of replacing head football coach Art Briles, University of Houston athletics director Dave Maggard insisted that nothing would be a barrier in his search for a replacement.

    Apparently that includes age.

Maggard is mulling a plan that would reach into the Cougars’ past, bringing former coach Jack Pardee out of retirement to replace Briles, who resigned Nov. 28 and signed a seven-year contract to succeed Guy Morriss at Baylor.

Maggard declined comment, saying he would not comment on any specifics in his search for a new head coach. Pardee could not be reached for comment.

But David Klingler, who is being targeted as the offensive coordinator in the new regime, confirmed that discussions have been held about the 71-year-old Pardee returning to the sidelines at the University of Houston.

“Yes, that’s true,” Klingler said. “I know some people would be concerned about his age, but you have to take each person on an individual basis. But I will say this -- I’ve been around a lot of coaches, and I wouldn’t consider doing this for anyone other than Jack Pardee.”

Pardee previously coached the Cougars for three years (1987-89), compiling a 22-11-1 record. He took over a team that finished 1-10 in 1986 and using his innovative Run ‘N Shoot attack, turned the Cougars into the nation’s 14th-ranked team before leaving to take over the Houston Oilers.

The plan would be to have as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Current staff member Jason Phillips would handle the wide receivers.

Jack Pardee? That's a name I haven't heard in ages. Can't believe he's 71! I wonder if he'll bring back the old run and shoot?

Since Major turned the job down, my # 1 is now Gus Malzahn.

Sounds like they want to groom Klingler for the job.

Houstonian Michael Haywood would be the safe pick. I can't see Malzahn staying 5 years.

This is either sheer Genius or an out and out science experiment gone bad.

I tend towards the genius here.
I would love for Jack to give us 3 or 4 seasons and hand it over to David.
There is the instant recruiting uptick with established bonafides.... along with a stable hand at the helm.(except for AFC Championship games)
We also pretty much have the people in place to run whatever he decides is on the menu.

Didn't he just join the Tulsa coaching staff?

As for UH/Pardee, sounds like they want Klinger in the long run but I don't think this will work out. There are a lot of good choices out there and UH should be an attractive job w/ all the in-state talent.

Hilarious! I was joking about Jack in the A&M thread. Nothing like Pardee Time. Hell, Hawaii shows there's a place in football for the run n shoot. Having Jack back would be awesome.

    I read this...Now that's what I call Old School...

I love these guys, but are there other options? You would think these coordinators would love a HC job...

Ummm. Maybe if he hired Buddy "The Punch Like A Girl" Ryan I could see this remark, but Jack is a genius.

Geniuses don't blow 32-point leads in the playoffs.

That would be so badass. Can't stand college sports but that just might get me to watch a few UH games.
