Not seeing it with Cole. Watched his game against NDSU... Looks athletic and rangy, but slow to trigger. He ends up catching and absorbing blocks too much. Also, he isn't tight to the hole coming downhill... runs too much of a bubble which leaves potential cutback lanes. At times it is hard to tell if he is slow on a stunt or just trying to freelance and run through a gap.... Either way he ends up running himself out of the play. Takes poor initial angles and ends up chasing plays at him, although he is decent in backside pursuit and gives nice effort until the whistle on plays away and down the field. Again... This is one game and NDSU is really good... However, I'm pretty sure the Titans, Colts, & Jags are better...
Caution, he's UDFA fo a reason: SOURCES TELL US "He's just not athletic enough. His myth kind of grew when he got hurt after he had put up a couple of decent games. I don't think he'll test well at the combine at all. I think he's going to run really slow." - NFC northwest area scout BOTTOM LINE Mathis doesn't have the length or the pass rush skills to play at defensive end so he will likely be considered as a 3-4 outside backer only. Mathis lacks the athleticism and twitch that teams want from their rush linebacker, but he does have some physicality and edge strength to battle against the run. Mathis could go on Day 3, but his ceiling could be as a serviceable backup unless he really refines his rush game and adds more quickness. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/jojo-mathis?id=2558275
This dude is interesting.... He has ball skills and is a willing tackler. Looks comfortable playing man, playing cover 2, blitzing, and forcing the run. He has good size and good pro day numbers for a safety. A short write up Some scouts even think he could play CB... Obviously, level of comp is big concern, but looks promising...
Well they aren't necessarily looking at him as a linebacker right away, or ever possibly. Guys like this make the team and make an impact with what they can bring to special teams. Athletic and rangy is exactly what you want on special teams.
Mathis looks like a good pickup for UDFA. Hardee interesting with 4.3 speed. Conque TE conversion most interesting to me. Big frame, definitely room to grow. Deceptive speed, seen him listed at 4.56 40 which is pretty well steppin for a big man.
Is Conque a decent enough QB that if he did show anything at all as TE you could roll with only Savage and Watson and get an extra field player?
Speaking of special teams... This dude is an absolute hammer... However, his measurables don't leave him with many ways to make the field. Williams is strictly a kick and punt cover guy. But you are right, Cole, in theory, could develop into more. OB is always saying, "the more you can do." But... this kid is fun to watch...
Yeah he looks like quite the thumper but those measurables are pretty gross. At only 5'9 there's not a lot of positions that he could play, then factor in his 4.7 40 speed and....yeah he's special teams or nothing. That said, LOTS of players have made damn good livings being nothing but special teams guys so there's hope for him.
So of these UDFA's originally listed, who have we yet to sign? I saw the mini camp video, saw Dylan Cole, but what about Jo Mathis?
Mathis was on a try-out. Apparently Dare Ogunwale, the RB from Wisconsin, wasn't on the official list of signees released by the Texans.
Yeah, since everyone on here had him an All-Pro. Since the Texans signed him, of course. Otherwise he is a scrub.
