Basic microeconomics my friend. Paying more for better spots is the most efficient (not fair, I said efficient) way of distribution.
I don't give a hoot whether it's financial advice, micro or macroeconomics or whatever... but... enough about me: What do people without "smart phones" but with cars looking for spots do when they see someone inside their car and they won't move? This is a bit pretentious... "I will only move for someone who will pay me for my spot"... don't you think? Also, parking spots are PUBLIC. The Parking Monkey or monkeys parking in them don't own it, and shouldn't be making money off of them. Besides, there are plenty of spots in Houston... I don't think it will work here. Maybe it needs its own thread to discuss it?
Thanks for this insight. Guess it couldn't hurt to sign up and test it out sometime soon once I get cleared via background check. How do all these free ride coupons effect your pay? Do you still get "paid"? Taking home $100-$150 a night sounds like easy money.
Exactly. This is like taking up park picnic tables or borrowing library books and exchanging their use for money. The police should crack down on this practice by if they see someone doing this giving them a few hundred dollar ticket.
That parking monkey thing is flat out gross. Good luck trying to orchestrate an exchange. I'd gun it into the spot before the paying guy does and nothing could stop me. It's a public spot.
Whoever Mike is, you used my code and got me a free ride! Going to use it this weekend on my anniversary. Thanks! Anyone else needing a code, mine is uberbaumer1.
I wish Parking Monkey and paying for restaurant reservations existed in Houston. It makes people mad tho
Uber is huge in San Francisco - just about everyone here uses it after years of being screwed by the cab companies. A few examples of cabs screwing us here: - call cab and have no idea when they will arrive to pick you up - random cancellations of pickup without notice - impossible to hail a cab during peak times like Fri/Sat night - cab drivers refusal to take you places - i.e. "sorry I can't go to Marina right now" - "my credit card machine is broken"
I like hopping in a cab and having to give them directions on how to get somewhere. Especially when all I'm doing is crossing downtown.
I mean you have to do that with Uber too sometimes but at least you know it's a side job for these guys. I've had great conversations with every Uber driver. Cab drivers? Not so much.
During Summerfest this year the first day got rain delayed. We were up at Lucky's downtown pounding beers when they say the festival is opening up again. Hop in a cab: Me: "Hey, can you take me to Eleanor Tinsley Park?" Cab: "I don't know where that is." Me: "Across downtown just take me right next to city hall." Cab "I don't know where that is." Me: "Take this street right here all the way down to Smith." Cab "Okay! If you say so." At first I was like but then felt good that I was still decent with directions after that many beers.
What specifically is it that you think makes Uber unique? If cabs integrated Uber, they could have the same ratings, etc. Sure - but we as a society have kind of decided that we think basic life-functionality services like mail and cabs should be equally available to poor people and disabled people and people with kids, etc. I know you don't necessarily believe that, but I'm pretty confident most of society does.
