Don’t assume they haven’t already. But the backlash would be unbearable to his campaign. He’d be finished if they got rid of the good doctor. Right and left (other than trump’s most hard core supporters) would riot (metaphorically).

"The Trump admin forced a catastrophic strategic surprise onto the American people. But unlike past strategic surprises—Pearl Harbor ... or especially 9/11—the current one was brought about by unprecedented indifference, even willful negligence." The Coronavirus Is the Worst Intelligence Failure in U.S. History It’s more glaring than Pearl Harbor and 9/11—and it’s all the fault of Donald Trump’s leadership. https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/03/25/coronavirus-worst-intelligence-failure-us-history-covid-19/
It is understandable that a majority of Americans think Trump is doing a good job. There is a strong desire to rally around the flag in a crisis especially in the early days. As it drags out longer things might change. For example most Americans strongly supported US military intervention in Vietnam even after the Tet Offensive. Also 60% approval of how he is handling the situation and 49% overall isn't a good sign. GW Bush after right after 9/11 approval rating was approaching 90%.
Another reason why Trump's approval rating is high is that under the Federal system states have a lot of power to address these type of crisis. All of these stay at home shelter in place orders are being made by governors. The Federal government can only issue guidance. We have a patchwork right now of responses but for those who don't follow the news much it might be understandable to think that what your state is doing is being done in coordination and/or from the direction of the Presidency. Trump might actually be getting the benefit of actions by governors even if he is quarreling with them.
Not press briefings, but praise briefings... What Trump's coronavirus briefings are really about https://theweek.com/articles/903682/what-trumps-coronavirus-briefings-are-really-about
I've been seeing on social media more sycophantic praise of Trump from his supporters. Some of it is over the top such calling him the greatest President ever, and the right man put in place by God for this time. . I've said before sycophants aren't helping Trump or the country. The proof is just seeing the markets drop literally as he speaks.
Who cares? People should be listening to doctors, and scientists.... Not Trump. Pay attention to what he does sure, but we've already seen him get people killed with his lying about miracle drugs, etc. People in the media should be shielding Trump's lies to the public... not promoting it. Brian Stelter should not be promoting this without a disclaimer.
Actually, lots of people do watch these. Trump’s coronavirus briefings get big ratings, but public health officials increasingly call them misleading. Should networks be covering them live? https://www.baltimoresun.com/corona...0200325-jhnfmx62nnfwnajn2jckmqh5wm-story.html
