So he's attempting to help a Chinese company he essentially crippled earlier when he's looking to work things out with the North Koreans....who couldn't survive without assistance from China. I wonder why Trump would suggest helping a Chinese company right before he asks for more help from China....are you guys seriously not able to understand this?

That was exactly the initial agreement. After 6-7 years of investigation, ZTE plead guilty and was fined for $1.2B for violating US laws - exporting US tech to Iran and NK (March 2017). They were allowed to continue doing business if they reprimand the employees involved in the violations. The dept of commerce found they even violated those terms and then proceeded to ban US company from providing chips (Qualcomm) and software (Google mobile services) to ZTE for 7 years (April 2018).

p.s. this is a law enforcement thingy... Trump does not need to be involved, should not need to be involved, probably was not initially involved (as the investigation started way before his term) and should not have stepped in like this. I don't think we have ever seen this type of simply ignoring law enforcement form the POTUS before.

I think this is actually good work by Trump, no lie. When ZTE looked like they wouldn't be in full compliance, Trump gave them a genuine fear that their NA operations would be completely dead, and the company more generally would take a big hit. They were contrite (about getting caught) and cowed. But, we don't really want to run ZTE out of business. They are a large competitor that makes the market more competitive and employ a lot of people and drive a lot of investment. There are many partners that rely on them. There would be litigation, there are investors to think of, and while you might want to put China on notice, you don't want to drive a reaction over this company. So once you get the proper follow through from this company, you let them back into the fold. So long as they are in compliance with American law, having them in the marketplace is a good thing for America.

The ‘national security’ was a pathetic excuse.

Hey, who would think that placing tariffs on foreign countries might impact U.S. businesses?

The reason given was "too many jobs in china lost" (and so "get it done"). Why do we have to reinterpret what he meant or is trying to do?

We have heard nothing about becoming compliance (although I'm sure that would be a great way to spin this now after the fact). It was about jobs in China (so weird). I imagine that Xi told Trump about job lost and Trump got some deal out of it. What deal - with all the conflict of interest, it's a bit messy to put it lightly.

Also remember that instead of "punishing" those employees responsible for violating US laws, ZTE actually gave them bonuses. If that's not a slap in the face, what is? And BTW, the initial agreement was back in March 2017. I doubt Trump has anything to do with it.

“Instead of reprimanding ZTE staff and senior management, ZTE rewarded them. This egregious behavior cannot be ignored,” Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a press release.

The company had also agreed at the time that it would forfeit its export privileges for seven years if it failed to meet the agreement, which is what’s happening now

What litigation? They broke the law and are being punished for doing so.

As for competition, investors, partners, it's not a huge dent globally. ZTE holds a tiny portion of the global phone market share and there are plenty of competition. This isn't a Samsung or even Huawei or Xiaomi.

p.s. on the security side, I wouldn't personally trust ZTE no matter how cheap their phones are.

Mr. trump is a corrupt son of a b****, yet some of you continue to support him. Mr. trump said himself, via twitter, that the US had to act to save Chinese jobs after getting $500 million bucks from China invested in a trump project in Indonesia. It was the direct opposite of what he campaigned on, which was saving American jobs being "stolen" by China and the opposite of what he has said since taking office, yet some of you continue to support him. Some of you have even made the claim that "most national security is bullshit." Really? Would you have posted that had President Obama done exactly the same thing that trump just did? Be honest, if that is remotely possible. You would not. You would be busy attacking President Obama and screaming bloody murder.

The lengths trump supporters will go to in order to make excuses for trump is breathtaking. Hypocrisy seems to be too mild a word to describe just how awful many of you look right now. Someday, those of you with some intelligence will look back on your actions during this national crisis, and that's what trump is, a national crisis, and shake your head, wondering what in the Hell you were thinking.

Investors will likely celebrate easing trade tensions. But the weapons used to achieve these modest ends—a halt to Chinese agricultural-tariff threats and the green light for Qualcomm’s NXP acquisition, in return for clemency on ZTE—are straight from the Chinese playbook. Beijing has long regarded laws as tools to be applied when politically convenient, rather than impartial rules.

Now, the U.S. has weaponized Iran sanctions and a Cold War-era national-security law, the legal basis of President Donald Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs, for mercantilist ends—precisely the sort of arbitrary enforcement of law that infuriates Western businesses in China.

What does this mean for investors?

First, Beijing will see the U.S.’s obvious desire to water down agricultural tariffs ahead of the midterm elections as validating its strategy to go after Mr. Trump’s political base, weakening the administration’s hand in future negotiations. Extracting meaningful concessions that could help a broad range of businesses, instead of just a few, will become more difficult.

Second, other big trading nations and multinational companies watching the U.S. use national-security legislation and sanctions to resolve trade disputes may conclude that the rules-based international trade system is in permanent decline. Companies will intensify lobbying to protect themselves and new trade barriers will spring up. And global manufacturers may curtail investment in global supply chains—ultimately pushing up costs, and inflation.

When will everyone realize that everything this guy has done, and is doing is one giant con?

The tariffs.... was a ploy to have companies come begging to him with pay to play and bribes. Same with tearing up the Iran deal where he now can have a power play with sanctions.

The government is now open for business, and you idiot Trump voters were dumb enough to not see it coming when it should have been so obvious. But damn if feels sooooo goood to yell with my racist redneck friends at a Trump rally about "Libtards", and crooked Hillary.

You guys sold the country down the river to snake oil salesman because of personal entertainment. F you guys. Seriously. Petulant children who don't know how good you have it.

This guy is currently going through confirmation hearings...

Top intelligence official says Chinese ZTE cellphones pose security risk to U.S.
President Trump wants to help the Chinese firm, but a top intel official told the Senate that ZTE cellphones may be used by the Chinese government to spy.

I wonder if ZTE sent Trump a free phone to send his tweets and handle the business of the US since he refuses to use a secure Blackberry.

ZTE was a big Rockets sponsor for a while. Not sure if they still are.
