I don't think that this conspiracy theory holds true. It just happens to be a "human interest story" with all the necessary elements for the average American to be able to take a side in the discussion. Some of the "more important news" are simply too complex or abstract for the average person.
Well we know Zimmerman has been arrested before for domestic violence, resisting a police officer with violence and speeding.

What if this turned out to be true? How ridiculous of a plot twist would that be! GZ turns out to be a Los Zetas drug lord who used the neighborhood watch program to keep out/huntdown competitors. He lured TM into the drug deal and than when he didn't have 60 for an 1/8th he shot him in cold blood.
First he just called the cops on him so he would go to jail but then Martin figured it out and got so pissed he beat him up not knowing Zimmer was strapped.
Get to work on the script, I am contacting Columbia Pictures. I am thinking Michael Pena as GZ and T.I. as TM. Also, Disney called, they're interested in doing a spin on the story with a cartoon series featuring Eddie Murphy. Money money money, MONAY
