Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Jake Peavy will be shopped. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/10/rosenthals-late.html I think the trade discussions begin and end with Hunter Pence.....would you rob Peter to pay Paul? Hunter is great, I love the kid, but for Peavy, done deal. thoughts?
The problem with giving up Pence is that he's cheap, and with so many high-priced players already, I have a hard time imagining this team giving up cheap production. With that said, from a personnel standpoint, it all depends on the Astros' plans for Pence. If they would consider moving him back to CF, then no, he's too valuable to deal at this age. But if they are locked into playing him in RF, I'd deal him in a heartbeat for a guy like Peavy. As a RF, Pence is no more valuable than, say, Luke Scott, and if they can take advantage of a team that overvalues him based on his rookie season and would treat him as a CF -- they should explore that.
Hunter dropped more than 100 points of OPS from his rookie to soph season. He's a league-average RF, no more. And OF is a pretty easy position to fill, especially compared to starting pitching. I'd make that move in a heartbeat. Peavy's a 27 year old Cy Young pitcher. That's a commodity worth its weight in gold.
Absolutely! I don't think we have enough to get that deal done. It would take well more than Hunter Pence.
I don't know about straight up, but it is being labeled as a 'cost-cutting measure' I'm just thinking that Hunter Pence has to be in the deal, because of his talent and cost.
If Wolf comes back, I don't think there will be any kind of marquee pitching addition. It's going to take $25 or $30 million over three years, minimum, to bring him back, and that's a substantial contract. I'd take the risk on Sheets before I'd do that.
Aside from Oswalt, is there any player on the roster that would be off limits in a trade for this guy?
pence for peavy is a no brainer for the astros, but at the same time i think we're selling hunter short if we're saying this is his peak after a little less than 2 full seasons. he had a monster rookie season and a good sophomore season, lets see how he adjusts now.
You guys won't get someone like Jake Peavy for just Hunter Pence. You're living in dreamland if you think that.
8-10 mil per for Wolf?? I don't think there's any way he will get that kind of cash on the open market.. and definitely not from us..
why did he resign with the pads anyway? he could have come here and played with his good buddy roy without us having to give up players for him. that said, other than santana, there isn't a pitcher in the league who i'd rather have. i love pence, but, if that's all it took, and i'm guessing it ain't, that's a no-brainer folks.
