PC numbers are just really hard to get, at least for me anyway. I know that they are out there somewhere, but I don't see them very much while I do see a lot of data on console/handheld sales. I believe the NPD tracks them, but it is hard enough getting console/handheld numbers from them, and that seems to be what a lot of people want. Outside of individual press releases or articles about PC sales, I just don't see much about them.

I checked out Wikipedia and they do have some sales data on a variety of PC games. I'm assuming all the sources are legit:

I haven't checked out the 20 or so sources for this info, so some of that might be VERY old or inaccurate. This might kind of give you an idea an how difficult it is to get the numbers, especially if the game isn't called "World of Warcraft" or something like that.

Based on the sales data you've given and also what you're saying above, it seems like if we're comparing PC vs. Console in terms of popularity, console obviously wins out by a ton. This would seem to imply that the PC gaming industry is winding down.. and eventually go the way of the dinosaur.

No question it is waning, it dropped 33% or so last year. The only thing holding it up right now is the MMORPG genre.

However, not all is lost, as the X-box 360 is essentially a powerful PC.

    :)

RTS games still work best on PC, and multiplayer PC games like Battlefield are still better than the console experience.

    I make both...

    :)

If they made RTS games for a major game platform, I might have an interest in one. As it is, there simply isn't anything I'm that interested in that'll cause me to purchase one for myself. I get that sort of thing for my kids, but I rarely play on them. I can access the internet (obviously!) from a PC/laptop, and play my RTS's with a mouse and direction buttons. My son plays World of Warcraft, which looks pretty cool. I might give that a try. Why should I buy a PS3, or an XBox 360? For my kids, maybe, but what's in it for me?? :p

    (Thanks for the info, RC!)
