Everyone mentioning a safety is way off base. The problem is lack of a holster. This is what got plax. Darwin award for carrying a gun in a purse (or a pocket) without a holster.

There was somebody that got shot and killed because he argued with another
customer at a Stafford area Walmart. And you seen those Black Friday videos. It ain't that safe shopping there. Maybe she was trying to be protective

That would be a poor guess.

In both anecdotes, loaded weapons were left in the presence of non-adults who manipulated them and ended up harming the owner.

Really? What's the violent crime rate in that city in Idaho? I'm asking because I seriously don't know...not to be a jerk.

Compare that to the rate of accidents where people get hurt with guns.

    EDIT:

This helps answer part of the question:

    http://www.areavibes.com/hayden-id/crime/

The estimated Hayden crime index is 9% lower than the Idaho average and and the Idaho crime index is 32% lower than the National average.

The estimated Hayden violent crime rate is 14% lower than the Idaho average and and the Idaho violent crime rate is 41% lower than the National average.

The estimated Hayden property crime rate is 9% lower than the Idaho average and and the Idaho property crime rate is 31% lower than the National average.

Hayden is safer than 68.4% of the cities in the nation.

The crime rate in Hayden is less than 69% of the cities in Idaho.

The estimated chance of being a victim of a crime in Hayden is 1 in 54.

The estimated chance of being a victim of a violent crime in Hayden is 1 in 541.

The estimated chance of being a victim of a property crime in Hayden is 1 in 59.

If it was Boise, then maybe. But that area of Idaho (and I'll include the nearby Spokane area since they are counted as one CSA), is pretty quiet.

Nationally, the number of people killed by accidental discharge of a firearm is very low. 591 in 2011.

    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr63/nvsr63_03.pdf

You only gave ratios but it should be easy to see your guess is wrong.

This would be easy to compare. How much safer would Hayden have to be to compete with a national average of 591 homicides?

Most accidental shootings do not result in death...

Just as most violent crimes are not life threatening.

Compare it to homicides then. 591/300 million What would the homicide rate in Ohio have to be?

That wasn't an accidental discharge. Plaxico Burress is the relevant example. Another Darwin hopeful not using a holster.

Good points. I was referencing the violent crimes not being life threatening.

Wasn't there another story about some guy shooting himself in the penis in a grocery store? With a pink tiny gun?

Also the NYPD officer who "accidentally" discharged his gun, killing a man last month.

What does Ohio have to do with a small town in Idaho?

I wasn't going for people that are victims of being shot as non-life threatening. Assault/Battery is more what I was going for.

I think the more salient point is that some don't think the threat level at rural Idaho Walmarts necessitate carrying a weapon when weighing it against the risk of firearm accidents. I don't have an opinion either way, but I do agree that rural Idaho Walmarts are probably less dangerous than other places. That said, the bigger mistake is that this woman shouldn't have a gun whether or not she felt like she needed it, because she didn't safely keep it away from her kids. I don't know how to legislate against stupidity.
