[TMZ] Dwight Howard Now Under Criminal Investigation for Child Abuse

This is a D&C case - "divorce and custody". I worked a spell as a CPS investigator here in Texas, and we used to get cases like this all the time. They are generally a ridiculous waste of investigators' time, and in this case under certain circumstances such frivolous cases can result in prosecution of the alleging parent making false allegations. I doubt that is the case in other states, though.

We would also get cases where a child was spanked with a belt buckle that left marks all the time. It happens accidentally most of the time. Usually, if there was no prior history of abuse and no other indications of abuse were found during the investigation we would simply let the parents off with a warning that they needed to be careful, especially when using a belt, because it is very easy for A) the parent to lose control, B) the child to move and end up getting hit on the legs or back (which is a no-no), or C) accidentally hit with the buckle. Worst case it would be found RTB (reason to believe) and the parent would have to do FBSS for a few months (attend parenting classes, have to be checked up on by FBSS workers, etc). Criminal charges were never brought in such cases, it was always a DFPS matter; children were never removed in such cases. Of course, different states have different laws, but this is pretty absurd.

I am fairly certain this is baby momma trying to get leverage in a custody case. Again, we saw that crapola all the time, and that is most likely why the Florida DCF found the case without merit. But when this happens with a public figure, everyone goes into PC and CYA mode, so it wouldn't surprise me to see the NBA do some sort of sanctions even if the legal cases are closed.

IIRC, the initial report said that she raised this issue after Dwight sought custody of the child. I imagine the thought of child support terminating might be driving her sudden concern.

Well yeah, seems obvious, but I don't get the impression that a lot of people know (or even care) that she initiated this in response to his request for custody. Just seems like another opportunity to condemn him in the court of public opinion without even considering what's driving Royce.

Ah, so this is really about custody and the baby mama continuing to get checks. Hope Dwight wins and gets this all cleared up.

Is it possible the two games Howard missed this past week are due to having to deal with these legal issues?

 

Only thing I can think of is that the league mandates media access to the team for a certain period of time after the game. Maybe his attorneys advised him against playing to avoid the questions that were sure to come tonight?

I doubt it. They'll just ask the next game. He can't keep dodging them. I think they just figured this was an easy game and could give Dwight a break and avoid another confrontation with Kobe that could end up worse.
