Why would a team trade to the #1 spot when they can trade to the #2 or #4 for cheaper and still have a good chance at getting their player. The pick becomes attractive if the team with #2 or #3 says they really like a guy that #5 or #6 really likes as well.
The same thing you suggest applies to the #1 pick as well. Especially if the Texans are willing to accept the same type of deal St Louis or the Jags would be willing to accept in a trade.
Unless they think we're going to take him, which is still the most likely thing to happen at this point.
I dunno, this close to the draft I think they are either certain, or nearly certain who they are going to pick. I think right now they are crossing their T's and dotting their I's but the majority of the work is done....or better be.
They are still interviewing and entertaining players this week and it seems they are still open to trades if the right offer presents itself. My thought is that they have a number (say, 5) of players that are willing to take.
Yeah but most of the work should be done already, I highly doubt that they'll be making up their mind based on a final interview. IMO that's nothing but due diligence. Of course they'll be open to some team sweeping them off their feet with a crazy trade, but I doubt they are waiting around for it.

But in this draft it's 12 players with a 93 or better draft grade (7 with a 94 or better). So I don't know why there is an assumption that the Texans can't trade past the #5 pick.
Perhaps because the teams with the 6th pick don't think it's worth a whole lot to trade up to #1 when they can stay put and get a really good player.
Point you have and there may be teams that view things that way... But so far there are rumors that a few teams are interested in moving up. So if the Texans are really trying hard to trade out of the #1 slot it shouldn't be too hard to do.
Pancakes is weird:

Stop the presses! Johnny Manziel, who's visiting the Texans today, just went to the bathroom! At this point, the person I want the most is Manziel. Yeah, he may bust, but so could Clowney. My dream scenario is Manziel falls, we get the sense that he will, so we take Mack or Clowney first, then trade up to 25. Something like #32, our third round pick, andaybe even a future fourth would easily get it done. At 25, we nab Manziel. This move, by itself, could potentially guarantee Rick Smith another five years.
