I don't see him being able to take advantage of match ups. He is who he is. He's good at everything. A Swiss Army knife if you will, but there isn't an aspect where he dominates. He certainly didn't deserve a max contract, glad it was the Mavs. I thought he reminded me more if Sean Elliot who ironically was going to be a Rocket for Horry but y'all already knew that.
I agree that I don't think he can, but that would be the next step for him. I always wondered how Elliot would do for us since he was a really good player IMO. That said, I love Horry and what he did for our team. Big Shot Bob FTW!
I said it before the season started, Ariza would be equal or better than Parsons in terms of value, at half the price it is a no-brainer and possibly the steal of the year (compared to Parsons and rofl Hayward???? getting 15M a year). First of all, Parsons is good overall but the problem with him is he can't step up when Harden is in a funk, we saw that in the Portland series that random SG was manhandling Harden left and right, it was up to Parsons to take advantage...but then he got owned by Batum, who not only locked him down but also lit up the Rox game after game. Being versatile does jack**** if you can't score against above average NBA defenders, Parsons' current skill level is at glue-guy level, not 2nd or 3rd option level. In such cases, a guy with defined strengths and weaknesses would've been better. For example, in that series if we had Ariza instead of Parsons sure he would've been locked down by Batum same as Parsons, but at the same time Ariza would've prevented Batum from breaking out and scoring a crap ton of points and we would've won the series instead. I also think the "creator" bit is overblown we already have 2 guys who are expected to touch the ball first in Harden and Howard. If we surround them with floor spacers like Bev, Ariza and Tjones then I think the offense will definitely be better. More importantly with both Ariza, Bev and Howard on the squad team won't be able to "cheat" on the rox by putting guys who can't score like that dude who defended Harden in the playoffs. Since the defense will be good, other teams will be forced to add more offensive (and likely weaker defensively) players or risk not being able to score points. We saw this in the Grizzly game, Ariza kept stealing the ball from offensively challenged guys like Tayshaun Prince which in turn lead to several Rox fast breaks. Offense and Defense are not separate in bball, each affects the other which is why if you look at top teams like the Spurs, they are good in both.
Can you imagine if we had Ariza last year?!?! Parsons big mouth and play was one of the keys to losing the Portland series. Already loving Ariza's mature approach to the game and his role. In 2010 he basically was asked to do too much and Morey brought him in for the wrong reasons. He was pretty good back then too, let's be honest. Right now: perfect fit and love his attitude over that ego big headed pretty boy Chandler. Ow yeah, added bonus: NO MORE CHANDLER BANG!!! That got so annoying.
Rockets health will dictate whether the Rockets made the right move or not. If they are healthy, than Ariza will prove the better of the two. I think defensively he will be super important come playoff time. If the Rockets lose Harden or Howard for a stretch, they will struggle more so offensively than they did last year.
While chandler parsons coach is calling him overweight we have some people thinking trevor ariza's a top 50 player http://feelingjustswell.com/2014/08/08/top-50-nba-rhttp:// Hello big 3
Any list that has Harden over Dwight loses a lot of credibility and illustrates a lack of general NBA awareness.
This. Just imagine how much better this team would be if Morey would have turned the cap space that Lin and Asik occupied into Ariza and Spencer Hawes and then kept Parsons. Instead Morey went big game hunting in order to lock up an all-star long term. One possible reason Morey went the latter route could be, and I'm just speculating but, big name players will be hesitant to sign long term contracts next offseason due to the new TV agreement. Smart players like Lebron will sign sort term contracts because they want to be free agents whenever the cap balloons. But, if Morey would have been able to lock up two or may be three championship level talents (Harden and Bosh with Parsons being the third) then he would have had those players on "the cheap" for at least one season. In the end, when you look at all the factors, you can't blame Morey for the decisions he made this offseason.
True. Remember how Casspi looked during preseason? He looked awesome. And remember Garcia in preseason? He couldn't miss from 3. But the thing this year about Black and Adrien is that they aren't just hitting shots during a hot streak. They are grabbing rebounds and fighting down low. That's not luck or a hot streak. That's just effort and ability. We've seen a lot of Canaan to know what kind of player he is. We know what to expect with Ish Smith.
Parsons was often a one-man fast break, something Ariza could never do. The selective memory in this thread is ridiculous yet par for the course.
Morey has you brainwashed. The vast majority of teams are not under the cap and still find ways to make transactions that are beneficial.
Agreed that you don't have to be under the cap to improve. In fact, the Rockets are doing it right now. But re-signing Parsons would've put the Rockets perilously close to the tax apron. That is the restriction Morey's talking about when it comes to flexibility, not the salary cap. The Clippers had to give away a 1st rounder in part because of this rule. There's no working around the apron.
