Anyone seen this article from the SI Vault? Saw it linked on one of the Free Darko articles, and I'd say it's a must read for all true Rockets fans.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1121540/1/index.htm

It's basically an in depth recap of Hakeen pre-NBA. Lots of cool stories about Hakeem that you might not be aware of, and comes across quite differently than the Hakeem most people associate with the championship years. Mentions Hakeem the club junkie, ice cream addict, etc.

You mean, Akeem. Yeah we all have some UH stories and I can add how he stole the Rice center's girlfriend away; she lived next door to my sister in Jones College.

Akeem was a dick then...with girl friends.

Sounds like there is more story there to tell. :)

Watching Akeem in college was the primary reason I fell in love with basketball. The whole city seemed to be behind Phi Slamma Jamma. That was just an electric time for basketball -- I'd flip through all the local news stations to get UH highlights. I think I even remember one sports anchor (Dan Patrick?) dressing up in all UH gear. I definitely remember going with a big group to a Chuck-E-Cheese to watch the UH-Georgetown Finals game in '84. I was an Astros and Oilers fanatic but the Rockets were barely on my radar back then.... I was disappointed that Dream was leaving, but thrilled when the Rockets won the coin toss.

For me it would be 10 years later... That is when I became conscious to the great game...

Pretty much the same for me though the Rockets were doing well in the late 70's, and that setup the Phi Slamma Jamma days in Bellaire stomping grounds. I am infamous for one fan pre-rowdie scream fests at the tv

They don't spell write like they used to anymore either.

That article rocked my world. lol Thanks for sharing!

Hakeem's story is definitely movie material. Having him toting a cooler around on campus, him hitting up clubs for the first time, PHi Slamma Jamma, NBA, and the rest of his whole story would be a phenomenal comedy/sports/biography movie.
