For all that Rick Adelman has done, whether it's giving players confidence, playing rookies, improving the offense, one fact is undeniable.

This defense has Jeff Van Gundys ugly mug and fingerprints all over it. Tracy and Yao have both mentioned that in post game interviews.

If we are lucky to make a deep run in the postseason, JVG should receive a lot of credit. He really taught Yao, Tracy and Shane and those 3 guys have imparted that wisdom on to the rookies who are playing uncharacteristically great defense.

Tis true - you have to love JVG.
and love how Scola and Landry fit perfectly within the Defensive scheme.

    Finally, we have teeth.
We are knocking other teams over with our hustle and grit.

If we make a deep run in the postseason, everyone on the team should grow combovers in his honor. Respeq.

Good post, maybe having JVG and then Adelman will end up propelling the Rockets far. Let's drop the comparing.

Yeah I give JVG credit for the D but RA is better with young players and gives them the confidence to do well. JVG would not have given the minutes to the young players.

JVG definitely set the defensive tone for this team, but it's nice to see Adelman improve the offense AND keep the guys motivated to play D

JVG deserves credit that the Rockets have some discipline defensive minded players.

However, Adelman has changed some match-ups and the defensive scheme. One big change that Adelman has implemented is having Yao stays in the paint (as opposed to JVG's show the guard to perimeter and dive back) and forces opponents to baseline more so that Yao can stay close to the basket. The defensive scheme against individual teams are not from JVG. Turner, Dunn and our scout are responsible for that.

Many posters want Tom Thibodeau to stay as anassistant coach. I dont agree with that. Adelman always prefer his defense in certain ways so it can be coordinated with his offensive scheme. Turner and Dunn, as his long time assistants, fit in that role perfectly.

Holy crap! How can you say that JVG should receive credits even for the rookies'(Scola, Landry, Brooks) defense? Are you smoking? Just want to remind you, historically, Adelman is a good coach on both ends (defense and offense). Adelman is very good on defense. Just go and check his coaching record. What a shame to start a thread like this.

JVG would have played Scola and Landry for sure. These guys hustle, have good b-ball IQ and give 110% each night. Those are pillars in JVG team.

IMHO.....JVG toughened our stars up and prepared them for the battles that lie ahead. No doubt he was the right coach to transform what was a soft, undisciplined team into a defensive juggernaut. RA is taking the house that JVG built and tuned it up a bit.

One of the most important changes this year in the defense and offense scheme is that we are really fighting for the offensive rebounds, and it has been a deadly weapon. Under JVG, we always tried to get back asap to stop any transition game from the opponent, whereas now we just kept on attacking the glass. This has tremendously helped us. We are giving up maybe a few more points a game on fast breaks, but we much more than made up for it with all those offensive rebounds and second chance points. Besides, the way we attack the glass makes any opponent second think before they want to run on a fast break. They had to fight really hard to secure the rebound first, before they can start to run.

It also helps having Landry and Scola as opposed to Juwan

You obviously went away for too long. Whether your point is valid or nonsense, it isn't acceptable here to EVER give JVG credit for anything. Consider yourself educated. ;)

    You are welcome.

Yeah of course, but Hayes and Battier could have gotten us a lot more of those if they are committed to it. Battier is not a great rebounder, but he is great at being in the right place at the right time, and he can probably just pick up one or two of those loose rebounds a game if he doesn't have to run all the way back every single time to cover the opponents best wing player.

This team reminds me of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2002 Season. The team held onto Tony Dungy's defensive philosophies(Monte Kiffin staying sure did help) but Jon Gruden's revamp of their offense turned them from first round fodder into the #2 seed in the conference. Lets see how the Rockets fare towards the end.
