Are you still doing this? I'm sure I'll end up down on the Island at some point this summer, and would love to hear your group and grab a drink.
I'm there this Saturday and the next Friday (July 3) and then I'm off for 6 weeks while I play a musical. Would probably be back on August 22.
Hoping those bacteria levels go down a bit. We're planning either a weekend @ Galveston or somewhere west of Austin down 71 most likely for July 11th.
I like how they just put up a few orange flags here and there and expect everyone to instantly see them and understand what they mean.
Looks like one of my recommendations was on the travel channel recently. <iframe width="640" height="387" src="http://www.travelchannel.com//content/tccom/en/vplayer.embedded.html/etc/sni-asset/travelchannel/videos/0/02/023/0239/0239694" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Ron- A few you left off. I'm sure I'm missing some in my additions: Smooth Tonys (By UTMB) Yagas (on the Strand) Pho 20 (on Broadway, East End) Mario's Seawall (east end) Olympia has two locations now- a more upscale place on Harborside and then their original place on Seawall. Maceo's (awesome Italian lunch on 25th st.
I saw Max's reply and had to ask... you play sax? I love that hotel, but it's been a few years since we've stayed there. Love jazz, as well. What's the name of your group? Now that the kids are out of the house, we're starting to get around more. Would really love to give you a listen sometime in the future.
*bump* Since my family has made more trips to Galveston, I'm sharing some of the tips I have learned: We like to drive right up to the water's edge. Only certain beach access points allow this (see map on page 1 of this thread). Pros: don't have to haul your stuff around the beach; Car is right there if you need anything. Cons: No place to poop People next you play loud music through car stereo Must drive way down the beach to get to these spots We bring a homemade "jellyfish response" kit. It contains vinegar, meat tenderizer, and a scrubby puff. We bring a heavy rake. Every time we go, we use it to rake away seaweed and trash. In a matter of minutes we end up with a decent beach spot. We bring about eight 1-gallon bottles full of tap water from home. One of the bottles has several holes poked in it (like a shower head). When we're packing up to leave, we rinse off with the tap water. The result: we don't feel sticky and smelly. Check http://www.texasbeachwatch.com before you go.
For those of you with a little cash to burn, rent a house in Beach Town. Its the high end development on the East side of the island. They clean the beach with big trucks every Friday, so no trash/seaweed on the weekends.
