A thousand more U.S. troops, to protect foreign commercial ships from mines. Makes a lot of sense. If you're the world's chief exporter of war and death.
1000 is a strong number but not enough to change the game. This is just to show that we are ramping things up.
Any 'war' with Iran would likely be bombing campaigns, and wouldn't last very long. I don't really see any chance this turns into a ground war in Iran.
Boy I'm glad I'm out with a service connected disability. No way in fighting another **** war. Oh boy... Have a sit down so I can teach you about COIN operations and how they apparently can last for multiple decades.
Can and would are two very different things. Why do you think they would in this scenario? I don't even think COIN would be the impetus. It would be counter strikes as retaliation for Iran's actions in the strait. I'm not even seeing those at a major scale as much of a high liklihood. More likely air cover and mine sweeping for the tankers. Same as the last time this happened. If this does turn into COIN, yes, that could last a while. But I'm not seeing it going there. I think limited actions to protect the shipping in the Strait.
You're right. The US will do some bombing runs, force a regime change and it'll all be done within a few months. Easy peazy. It only took more than a decade to "stabilize" Iraq, a smaller and far less powerful nation than Iran.
A new detail to an old story. . . . Remember one poster thought Iranian drones were flying on the day the ships were bombed. I never heard this new detail until today! US drones were flying, and the USS Bainbridge was nearby when those ships were bombed, but no one knows any Iranian ships or drones that were nearby. Our evidence gathering sucks ass. Why didn't our drones spot anything? And I just wish Secretary of State Pompeo was not a confessed trained liar from the CIA. Looking forward to all the self-righteous "Alas, we must kill again" posts today, many from "liberals"!
Curious, which "liberals" on this board post "must kill again" posts? Seems almost all oppose the growing move towards war with Iran and most believe trump and his admin are not being truthful about the reasons given to escalate this towards a war... in fact, seems most people here seem to oppose it.
Does schizophrenia apply to imaginary posters? Because I haven't seen a liberal advocate for war with Iran here.
I've put a lot of thought into the recent events and I happen to know that, via the Dallas Fed, the break even point for shale production is $50 per barrel and we need to to be net energy exporters. Well, the price of oil was at a healthy $60 recently but was diving toward $50 very quickly before all this happened. In fact, it hit a recent low of about $51 per barrel June 12. On June 13, suddenly these events happen in the straight of Hormuz off the coast of Iran where one-fifth of the world's oil supply comes from. This instantly drove prices up. Now we have this drone event, driving them up higher. So I ask who benefits? Iran may benefit because it helps them, but really, we benefit and this props up our economy and could be what is staving off recession. If you ask me the timing is mighty convenient for the U.S. economy and especially the energy industry. Either way, Houston benefits a lot from these tensions. https://www.chron.com/business/ener...le-gains-bring-U-S-oil-breakeven-13866348.php https://oilprice.com/
Some background as to why Iran would avoid US related ships, and why they'd want to get rid of unexploded ordinance. Operation Praying Mantis ...which was a follow-on of Operation Earnest Will Basically, Iran mined the gulf as part of the Iran-Iraq war. US put their flag on a bunch of Kuwaiti tankers, and escorted them and when a US escort ship ran into an Iranian mine they used serial numbers to prove it was Iranian and used that justification to kick the crap out of Iran's navy. Basically the US was your kid in the back seat of the car screaming "stop touching me" as they poked their sibling repeatedly. In that context, Iran's actions actually seem a little weak and pathetic. They want to punch the bully in the face, but they know they'll lose a fight so they kick the crap out of some random defenseless kid who had nothing to do with the bullying. The hawks are doing everything they can think of to get Iran to lose their cool, and Iran understands this, which is super frustrating for the hawks. I'm sure they'll eventually find some junior lieutenant IRGC officer who loses their cool or they'll just gin up a pretext and scream "Remember the Maine!"
I stand corrected. Only one "liberal" is going with the official story: I asked for a link to Iran's threats. None! He has not called for killing. Respect out to everyone who opposes war, especially when it involves U.S. troops in foreign countries. Keep our soldiers home and safe.
Ok, if you're just going to give flippant answers, we can cease discussing. Precisely why I don't think it will escalate to that, and precisely why I asked why you thought it would. Your inability to provide any reason or justification is duly noted.
You honestly haven't provided an answer on why it won't break into a long drawn out war. I'm going by precedent. Name a regime change for a regime as powerful as the Islamic Republic of Iran that took months. Nam? Iraq? Afghanistan?
Why is higher energy cost beneficial to the economy? To oil energy sector yes, but the economy? I thought it’s the other way... too high a cost would slowdown the economy.
