He released the report that he was going to report during week 3 of the preseason to sign his tender. A lot of players on the franchise do that. Reduces the chance of injury. But when he found out the Texans only intention was to trade him once he signed the tender, he decided to use his leverage to decide where he wanted to go. He always had the intention to play here. All the Texans had to do was let him play this year on the tag and then sign or trade him. Instead they were dangling him in trade offers. He heard about it and got picked. Started leaking all kinds of stuff.
I would want him to just play his whole career here, evidently they were not going to work anything out. I’m wanting to know where all the reports are of teams wanting to give anything up for him. I know he was not unwanted because of his abilities because he is a force on the field. But I wouldn’t give a wooden nickel for him, he’s a liability with his knee, it could shut him down at anytime from what I understand about micro fracture surgery. I’m not an expert but I did stay at a holiday inn last night . I’m sure someone will set me straight if I’m wrong
The thing to do would have been let him play the year out. See if he changes his mind or if someone offers a better deal in a trade. Or worst case, get one more year out of him. I don't know about what teams were willing to give up for him. Maybe there wasn't a good trade market for him but that is more reason to just let him play the year out. They still could have gotten the 3rd comp pick if he walked after the season. Microfracture surgery isn't what it used to be with the medical technology. Clowney has had a couple solid seasons since he had surgery. Injury is so unpredictable anyways. Nick Foles just got injured in his first game for the Jaguars. Tyreek just barely signed his new deal and he got injured in the 1st half of the 1st game of the season. It's the part of the game. But I understand if the Texans decided to move away from him because of the injuries. I just don't think it is fair to say Clowney was being greedy and wanted too much money.
sure, but that doesn't excuse the sht trade to extract the value of a player of his caliber. Hell we even paid the Seahawks to take him off us.
Still unbelievable we're paying almost half his contract. That's bad even for the Texans. O'Brien knew they weren't signing Clowney long term long ago. They even went as far as offering money for a position he barely played, just to low-ball. Texans didn't plan the situation accordingly, which led to a time crunch, thus desperation. Seahawks took full advantage. Judging from Clowney sacking in his first game, Seattle has already developed him better and/or schemed him better.
Im not defending the trade. I don't understanding paying part of the contract. I still think Jacob Martin is the key to that trade.
On Clowney's sack. Dalton was flushed out of the pocket by other Seahawks and Dalton tried to run for yardage from behind the line of scrimmage. Clowney chased him down because he is faster than Dalton and caught him just as he was going out of bounds, and tackled him out of bounds for a loss.
Interesting stuff from LZ this morning on JD (that I had never heard before).: LZ stated some of JD’s teammates were not happy with his lack of pass rush development. Stated some guys were openly wondering why it took 4 years for JD to spend the offseason with a pass rush specialist in an effort to better his craft. Given how LZ was phrasing things, JJ was clearly one of those teammates who wasn’t thrilled with him….or his practice habits. As we continue to learn more, it is becoming clearer and clearer why he was traded and that he was never going to be here long term.
You think Seattle developed Clowney and/or created a scheme for him in a few practices??? Not saying they won't in the long run but c'mon man... Any bum can get a sack, it's the sustained pressure and sacks that prove your worth.
The entire NFL knew that the Texans wanted to trade Clowney. No bidding war ensued. That may explain why the trade return was so light.
JD could have wanted a trillion dollars per season but that's what the Franchise tag is there for and to be used twice. The NFLPA has to bargain that if you want to keep the franchise tag you shouldn't be able to trade the player who signs the franchise tag tender. B.O.B was peeved that team Clowney out maneuvered him like it was one of his late game situation follies. The team paying almost half of this year's salary is very telling that he just wanted him out of here. Great for Clowney to be in Seattle. But the more that passes, I hate this "trade" even more. With scheming, a sharp romeo can get around the loss of Clowney. He did so for the loss of Watt in 2016 where JD was used like Seymour on steroids. B.O.B doesn't beat the Raiders in the playoffs without JD.
No one likes this trade. You weren't going to get much at this time of the year. They should have franchised him again and traded him before the draft next year. I also do believe this may be wanna the reason Gaine was fired. It sounds like O'Brien wanted to trade Clowney (Yes, there were reports otherwise). Gaine was passive in trading (against that 3rd rounder to move up) and spending on FAs.
I am curious to see where the Texans finish in defense this year. Because if they prefer "hard workers" over talented players, then they better make sure the guys with super practice habits will also actually play well in games.
The 2 are not mutually exclusive. That is the issue. If you want to be GREAT, those 2 things usually go together.
