Being an adamant supporter for Bridgewater being drafted with the first pick, I'm more than ok with Clowney, which seems to be pretty much a given. Time to start debating which qb in the 2nd. If anything this shows us what the front office has in mind going into the draft.
I don't want to be "that guy", but I think Bortles' white skin would be his contribution to this Frankenstein that we are building, improving his credibility as a QB prospect among some fans.
If I'm about to invest a #1 overall pick into a QB, one of the last things on my mind would be spending what little money I have on a multi-year deal for a veteran QB. Unless, of course, I've got a Schaub trade in my back pocket. Which is yet to be seen. It's a droplet of water in what will be a buckets worth of decisions this offseason... but since it's one of the few things we have to go on, it's fair game to be read into.
Sort of like backup SG's who average 12.7 points per game in their first 3 seasons....Stats are terrible things when you try to use them out of context.
Hearing rumors about details of the deal. 3.75MM/year. That's almost as much as we would save this year by cutting Schaub. If true, Schaub has to be a goner now. If he isn't, I'll be absolutely stunned. Beyond that, I'm slightly less surprised at this signing now that I remember Fitzpatrick faced O'Brien's Patriots 5 times in O'Brien's last 3 years in the NFL... and played fairly well. Must have left an impression on Bill.
You can't debate the "3 sacks = no motor crowd." He could be the next LT but it won't matter to the haters.
So you'd rather we get rid of Schaub and only have a rookie and Keenum as our QBs (assuming Yates gets cut too)? If you're drafting a young QB, it's preferable to have a vet on the roster to help mentor him. Keenum sure as hell isn't going to be a mentor. This is what's been reported all along. That the Texans would cut Schaub, sign a vet, and draft a QB, probably with the #1 pick. What's changed? Nothing. We're following the plan most expected us to follow. We may not draft a QB #1 but this certainly doesn't preclude us from doing so. The Panthers drafted Cam Newton #1 and then signed Derek Anderson to be the backup. The Rams went out and signed AJ Feeley to a 2 year deal and then drafted Sam Bradford. Maybe not the best example but the Raiders drafted Jamarcus Russell and then traded for Josh McCown AND then signed Daunte Culpepper. Titans drafted Vince Young with the #3 pick and then signed Kerry Collins. The Giants drafted Eli Manning and then signed Kurt Warner. Taking a QB at the top of the draft and signing a vet to back him up, or sometimes start until the rookie is ready, is not a rare occurrence.
No, and I never suggested such. I just wasn't 100% sold on the idea that Schaub was gone no matter what. If Fitzpatrick's deal is as rich as I'm hearing it is, that changes though. Signing a veteran to a 1MM-1.5MM one year deal would present an entirely different dynamic.
I don't think there's any doubt. There's no point to signing Fitzpatrick if they were keeping Schaub on the roster.
What about the "he's not a fit for a 2 Gap 3-4" crowd? He may end up being a hell of a player, but he may not be the best option if you end up miscasting him as a 3-4 DE or OLB when he really needs to be a 4-3 DE in order to live up to his potential.
