Yeah, he was overpaid. That was key. Also, he put in a lot of time trying to improve and simply didn't get better. And yeah, aside from the punt, the guy just couldn't catch the ball consistently. He actually had to work to get PI calls because he knew he wouldn't be able to catch anything.
I didn't have a problem re-signing him but it seemed like a LOT of money to throw at a backup who had never even thrown a single pass during a regular season game for you.
I figured it would be a whole hell of a lot easier to trade Leinart to the Redskins, Raiders, or Dolphins for a pick than it would be to try and trade Jacoby Jones anywhere. Perhaps we released those guys in the wrong order...
True but he was a former first round pick QB that many thought was one of the top five QBs in a good draft. Not to mention young enough that if necessary and Schaub didn't work out, you could make a go of using him as the QB of the future. It just sucked for him that in his first outing as the starter he gets taken out after one half with maybe two good drives where he started clicking with the offense. Either way, hopefully he will do ok with the Raiders.
I understand that, my understanding that we were over $4 million AFTER the draft picks were figured in. Perhaps I am wrong, I just remember Hub Arkush talking about our cap situation.
whatever the cap situation is, the texans couldnt afford going after the higher ranked WR FAs. Maybe they could have squeezed them into the cap for this year but next year the texans have to have some money on standby for Brown and Barwin.
We were talking about Manningham who signed a 2/7.5 deal... but maybe he wouldn't want to play in Houston... I don't know...
Even still. That's 3 million or so that you are taking away from your cap next year. Texans will need every bit to resign brown
That's true, but he helped out his price tag with the flirtation with the Seahwaks. And last year showed how critical a backup QB can be. #### collarbone.
no no no lets blow it on a free agent WR looking for a payday and let Brown, Barwin, Schaub all go... you know - because 3rd WR is a must in this offense. It's going to be a long offseason with people just trying to figure out what and how to b**** about the Texans.
Speaking of Duane Brown, outside of our ability to franchise which is never best case for anyone involved, what rights will the team hold over him next year? Will he be UFA or RFA, if it's the former I hope something is done now and he is not given the oppurtunity to test the market.
No, but that money still would have taken a chance out of Foster and Bradie James' deals, not to mention we still had to allocate money towards our draft picks AND keep space for in-season pick-ups. Injuries ARE going to happen during the course of the season, so the Texans have to make sure they are flexible enough to make acquisitions during the season.
They chose not to re‐sign kicker who can't kick if it's out 38 to 40 yards range and missed a FG in the Baltimore game and got rid of a overpayed underachieved WR who dropped a punt in the same game. Just like that, the Texans just got better with the new players coming in. Next season can't arrive fast enough.
so true, we just got better by subtracting & I really think our defense will do even more if that is possible. Foster should get 1800+ yards rushing if our defense minimizes the other teams' time of possession. The draft seemed very solid
