We say this with caution but the idea that the Texans defense could be what they were last season. It is showing with the defense in good form to start OTAs. Their top twelve to thirteen defenders return for 2016 and on the field the defense looks smooth and most impressive attribute of the unit is the communication coming from the group. No one is afraid to talk to each other and Quintin Demps and Andre Hal are the most notable making calls and discussing situations with teammates after each play. Brian Cushing and Benardrick McKinney are also a nice combination and have helped streamline the defense in directing traffic when the offense breaks the huddle. This a unit that is picking up right from where they were last season but temper expectations because every season is a new one.

One thing noted from Brock Osweiler today is the amount of coaching he does after each play with teammates. Getting with teammates about particulars in plays and making sure the entire team is on the same page. The offense is taking to him as a leader and today he threw the ball well. With connections to DeAndre Hopkins, Cecil Shorts III and Jaelen Strong the early returns are solid. Osweiler looks much better than day one out at OTAs and it showed today on the field with a much smoother offensive day.

Jadeveon Clowney has continued to take to the coaching that Mike Vrabel has given to him over the past three seasons. Clowney has become a better technician with his pass rush moves and it is the constant back and forth between coach and player that have helped refine his skills. He is constantly woking his hand game and it is much more violent in 2016 than previous seasons.

Lamar Miller is looking like a well tuned piece of the offense and he is getting his chance to show his skills catching the football. When plays breakdown, Miller’s athleticism takes over and he can run away from one on one coverages. He had some good hook ups with Osweiler in situations like these today getting in and out of breaks. One thing is for sure, not many linebackers can stay with him in the open field. Miller no doubt has the speed but he has plus hands that were not utilized much in Miami.

Two rookie free agent to watch are tight end Stephen Anderson and cornerback Richard Leonard. For rookie free agents early in the process, it is all about opportunity. Anderson and Leonard are getting just that to get themselves on film and they are showing well early.
Anderson continues to show what made him a potential target late in the draft when he was a pass catching threat for Cal. Holding his own versus NFL veterans, his best catch came from the arm of Osweiler when he ran a nice route and hit him in stride between two defenders. Anderson will have to make his living catching the ball at a high level and he has started in the right direction early.

As for Leonard, it is going to be open competition for the final cornerback spot and the rookie from Florida International is an early one to watch. A little bit on the smaller side measuring in at 5-9, Leonard has good feet and coverage abilities. He will have to produce on the inside of the defense and the concern is if he gets extended to the boundary against bigger receivers. He is a pesky player in coverage and has a good understanding of what is being asked of him and that alone is putting his name into the hat as training camp approaches.

1. Much has been made of the tight end position since Coach Bill O’Brien and his staff took over in January of 2014. Considering the success O’Brien had with tight ends in New England and at Penn State, a lot was expected from this group. It’s not worked out as well as anyone would’ve hoped. Today, though, was another solid outing by the group. C.J. Fiedorowicz caught a few balls, but the majority of the receiving action went to Anthony Denham and rookie Stephen Anderson. Both former Pac-12 tight ends are willing and able pass catchers and can get open against linebackers and/or safeties.

2. During his post-practice press conference, Coach O’Brien went into great detail about how the tight end slot is actually segregated into three different positions. As such, all are asked to do different things in this offense. Denham and Anderson are in a similar bucket, so to speak, but they can be used to create mismatches in the gameplan and that makes both of them valuable to the offense. Anderson made an excellent catch on a throw from Brock Osweiler and Denham made a handful of catches during team and 7-on-7 periods.

3. Brock Osweiler spun the ball well and seemed extremely comfortable in team situations. It feels like he thrives in competitive situations with all the chaos happening around him. He seemed to have a good amount of zip on his throws and threw tight spirals throughout practice.

4. When Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last season that Brandon Weeden was one of the most natural throwers he’d ever seen when Weeden was with the Cowboys, people scoffed. But, honestly, he wasn’t far off the mark. I’ve seen hundreds of quarterbacks over the years and very few throw with that amount of zip and with such ease like Weeden. I love to watch that guy throw the rock.

5. The one consistent aspect of all three quarterbacks was the decision-making. They all seem to be seeing/reading the defense and making sure decisions rapidly, which is a must in this offense.

6. It’s becoming more and more clear that Osweiler is starting to understand where each receiver would like the football, in particular Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins.

7. Speaking of Hopkins, he and cornerback A.J. Bouye went at each other for the majority of practice. They’ve seen one another a bunch since each came into the league in 2013 and today was another fun competition between the two. Hopkins has mastered how to use his body to gain leverage downfield and create contact and a flag. Bouye, though, challenged Hop all over the field, even coming up with a pass breakup.

8. But, it was nice to see Brock and Hop getting their timing down on certain routes that might become commonplace in this offense.

9. I mentioned safety Andre Hall last week as a guy who could really shine in 2016 and one of the main reasons is that he’s completely in charge in the back. He’s truly responsible for getting everyone in place and communicating with the entire secondary. And, it’s not as if he has his full complement of defensive backs with him either. At one point, as he tried to get the attention of a young defensive back, his voice went up an octave or two to get the DB’s attention. But, he did and the coverage went off without a hitch.

10. Lamar Miller’s addition to this offense will assist the running game and that’s quite clear - just turn on last year’s Dolphins’ win over the Texans. But, he has a pair of natural hands and it’s clear why the Dolphins used him more and more over his four years in Miami. Miller can be a weapon in this pass game and be a true three down running back warrior. How they ultimately use him, in particular, where they use him in the passing game, could create a ton of issues for opposing defenses in the near future.

11. Rookie wide receiver Tevin Jones, from Memphis, had a solid workout, making multiple catches throughout the day. He’s an interesting candidate at the receiver position, even amongst a logjam at the position.

12. Linebacker Brian Peters is well known for his special teams play and it’s no surprise that he can fly. He was a college safety so that’s not out of the norm. That speed manifests itself in coverage and his smarts and intelligence make him an excellent cover linebacker. He was in the hip pocket of a running back on one of the last reps of the day.

Brax Miller ran routes amazing today. Similar to Kevin Walter in his prime.

Fuller also looked like the next coming of Corey Bradford.

I love all the positive on Hal. He was an excellent pick in the later rounds. He's got a lot of promise, and honestly, could be a top 10 safety within the next three years.

Anyone have any idea on that Wendall Williams guy? Obviously there has to be pass catching and/or route running problems or he would have been drafted, but I would literally give him a spot solely as a return man if we had to. We need someone people are scared of back there who can give us good starting field position. And it's crazy to think he is the fastest one on the team.

Patrick Star suggested Texans may try to hide Williams during preseason so they can sign him to practice squad. He also thought it was interesting that Williams is repped by super-agent Drew Rosenhaus.

You won't get it from John Harris. I appreciate his football acumen and ability to break down film but he is just not going to say anything negative about the Texans. PDS and Braddock are a little more objective. Steph Stradley does a pretty job about talking about the good and the bad.

Braddock lost my respect pretty quickly. His 15 minutes has seemed to turn him into an A-hole. He can't listen to an opinion if it's not his own. He's been pretty negative about Brock too. Hoping Brock and Fuller break out so he will quiet down some. Of course I want those two to succeed more for the Texans sake. Just saying.

A closer look at the 7th Houston Texans OTAs practice for 2016.

J.J. Watt returned to OTAs for the Texans, in his first football action since the last game of the 2015 season. Watt was doing the typical Watt-things to which most onlookers have been accustomed and looked like his normal high energy self. He was quick off the ball and used his power to move offensive lineman. It was pretty clear he was excited about being back on the field.

David Quessenberry was back on the field for the Texans taking in practice with his teammates. Quessenberry was placed on the NFi list ending his 2016 season but it appears he will be part of the team helping out in some form or fashion.

Not much has been said of DeAndre Hopkins, but he is starting to get into a rhythm with quarterback Brock Osweiler on the field. Hopkins is still smooth running routes, and his catch radius is as good as ever. It is hard for any real defenders to control Hopkins and Osweiler is learning that when he gets the ball in Hopkins' vast catch radius, good things happen. He is working into form and it is looking like he is getting primed for another big season.

Rookie wide receiver Will Fuller V had his best day of practice since arriving during rookie mini-camp. Fuller is starting to make catches look easy and there are times where he reverts back to doing what he did at Notre Dame. He is working hard to fine tune his game in individual and team drills. Today, he was able to use his speed against NFL competition, creating space and going up over defenders to complete catches. He showed different parts of his game that make him an interesting player to watch develop.

The most active defensive back for the Texans is A.J. Bouye and his aggressive style is helping him early. Bouye continues to break up passes and get his hands on interceptions. That has been Bouye’s biggest issue since arriving to the Texans, harnessing his aggressiveness to stay away from penalties and make solid plays. Early signs show him being ready to make a jump and able help out a deep cornerback position group.

Running back Alfred Blueis continuing to be an interesting player to monitor as OTAs continue. He has dropped more weight this season and looks less heavy than last season. He is being counted on to help teach the system to Lamar Miller but he is looking comfortable in his known role within the offense. Blue looks solid catching the football and is helping to fine tune the running game. The Texans are asking him to be a better version of the player he was last season and it is clear with the way he is handling himself on the field, he understands what is expected in year three.

The battle for the final tight end spot is taking shape between Anthony Denham and Stephen Anderson. Both showed they can catch the ball at a good clip but Anderson is showing much more consistency in that department early. Anderson, a rookie, is holding his own against NFL competition and that could be something to watch especially in what some call a passing camp. It is in shirts and shorts but coverage and routes still translate to padded practices. Denham will have to step up over the next month to unseat Anderson, while Anderson just needs to continue on the path he is currently on.

Pass catching is a plus for Lamar Miller and he is showing it day-to-day on the field. Miller is getting settled into his role and he is catching with confidence. He is one of the better pass catchers of a talent group.

Akeem Hunt and Jonathan Grimes are not giving anything away on the field either and both are doing what they want in the passing game. They are working well with the quarterbacks and both stand out in running routes, keeping linebackers at bay.

Kurtis Drummond has locked in over the off season and looks ready for bigger things in 2016. He looks to be transitioning in coverage and can see he is better suited for what the team needs. Added with Quintin Demps, Andre Hal, and Eddie Pleasant, Drummond will have to show he can be Demps’ primary back up.

The offense is into week three of working under Brock Osweiler but the Texans defense is not taking it easy on him. Osweiler can get going in a hurry when he can string passes together, which he did today with Cecil Shorts III and Hopkins. He did display some arm strength, overthrowing some of the faster receivers on the field, which is a good barometer on what type of arm strength he has.

Osweiler is getting comfortable with the likes of Anderson and Strong also, making practices interesting to watch when they get into a rhythm. The offense is looking much more well-run than it did on day one and they have come together as a team. Osweiler is showing good accuracy inside the numbers and is getting the ball out on time, which is where the Texans like to live as an offense. It is early but every practice, he has become sharper with the team.

O’Brien mentioned that Osweiler not going to the White House with he Denver Broncos was truly his quarterback’s decision. He also mentioned that OTAs are voluntary and that players are not required to be here.

Agreed. He loves to point out he had Ty Hilton and Marvin Jones over Devier Posey and Keyshawn Martin, thus making his opinions on WR's the be all end all, while conveniently not mentioning he had Cordarrelle Patterson over Hopkins, and him going all in on some no name QB as the next Tom Brady whos name that I fail to remember
