Hoyer is supposedly going to be making more money than Mallet. I think there is a very good chance that Hoyer could end up starting.
Overall salary means nothing... it will be an open competition if Hoyer ends up signing, much like the situation he'd be in if he signed with the Jets.
If he does, it will be by only a few dollars. Mallet is essentially on a "prove it" contract. Hoyer is a more known commodity, and his contract reflects that.
Robert Downey Jr. only got paid $500,000 to be Iron Man. You take a short term loss, but if he does his job and becomes a great starter (which we give him a good chance to do) he can easily make it up on his next deal. As opposed to making more this year to be in a bad situation elsewhere.
It's a smart move on his part. BOB's system gives him the best chance to become a top 10 QB. If Mallet shines this year, he will get a new deal this offseason and get paid much better than he would have gotten on the open market this year.

I gotta agree. Yeah neither of these QBs get me super pumped, but our options are pretty damn limited as far as availability at the moment. Getting 2 of the top free agents seems pretty damn solid to me given the circumstances.
Wow. What a gamble, but he is really banking on himself having a big year. I love his confidence in himself.
Weird... I wouldn't have taken less if the team I'm taking less from went out of there way to get Hoyer, then asked me to take significantly less. As much as it says about Mallet's confidence in himself, depending on how you look at it, it kind of reveals that the Texans have some confidence in Hoyer. Unless they were 110% certain Mallet was on board to take that much less from the get-go.
I think Mallet's contract is really more like a 1-year deal with the wink-wink that it will turn into something bigger should he have a good season.
if he can stay healthy he will be the starter but if he get hurt again in warm ups then we have another starter than can come in and hopefully keep us going.
This guy is hungry and wants to prove himself on the team that gave him his opportunity. Love it. This is a sign of a true competitor.
