Added one word there. He's gotta work with a coach that helps him reorganize his footwork and his release. Just flinging up 500-1000 jumpers everyday with the same form will have very limited benefit. He does need to make mechanical adjustments....that he hasn't made in the last 5 years. He can't do that during the balance of this season of course. But....if he continues to let 'er rip like he did last night...he'll be more successful than he has been up to this point in his career shooting the basketball. And we've got to have that 3-ball from him for us to win a championship. He's going to be left open to shoot it. He's got to step into it and shoot it with confidence. I doubt if he shoots it at a great percentage but he's got to at least bump it up to 33% or so by letting it go and shooting it with purpose and confidence. I want to see him continue shooting the ball like he did last night. That's a potential game-changer for this team. IF he doesn't, if he goes back to his snail pace release and standing out there measuring everything out, looking down at his feet, measuring the shot, cocking and then slowly unwinding into the release...that's the death knoll for our offense in the playoffs. We simply have to have players out there that will take their wide open looks in a good natural rhythm without hesitation and with confidence.
He's hit a wall. It's his first full season as an NBA player. He hardly played as a rookie and only got limited minutes last year. Plus it doesn't help that he's playing out of position at center. Thankfully T-Jones' injury, D-Mo's emergence, T-Jones' return, and D-Mo's slump(not to mention the Josh Smith acquisition) couldn't have been timed better. It seems like each one has led right into the next which has helped the team avoid missing any beats. And if you think about it, T-Jones' injury was somewhat of a blessing in disguise. If he doesn't get hurt, D-Mo never gets the chance to play that many minutes and show off his post game. Smith potentially passes on the Rockets since they would've already had 2 PFs. And T-Jones doesn't spend 3 months with nothing to do but bulk up which has allowed him to become a bigger force in the paint.
No doubt about that. Young players are unpredictable, and once their confidence falls, they start making mistakes again. For now we can be cautiously optimistic about future progress, since Jones has been playing well in a stretch of games, and his confidence is rising as a result of it.
Jones' PER is up to 19.73 Last 5 games he has averaged 20.2 points on .646 shooting 8.8 rebounds 1.8 blocks These past 5 games have been against teams with good front court players too so these numbers can't be knocked. Detroit, Memphis, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Brooklyn. The only big men we've had recently that have put up stats like those are Dwight Howard and Jones and he had stretches last year where he had even better numbers. You have to go all the way back to Yao probably before that. Jones has a ton of potential. I honestly think that if he were on a bad team where he could be relied upon to do more he would step up and would be in the conversation around the NBA as one of the top up and coming young PFs.
He is just a run of the mill player who is easily replaceable. He most likely wont stay in this league long term. lol
There are at least 250 players in this league that had 5 games this year where they easily averaged 19 PER
What about... This team won't miss him being out? Imagine if he is still out, we might be in 7th place.
Well last year he only had good games supposedly because of being able to play next to Dwight. Nevermind the fact that none of the other guys plugged into that spot over the years have duplicated those numbers.
I am not high on PER but if we are using that as a measuring stick, did these players do it in a 5 game stretch or that is 5 out of 52 games? I am almost certain that you agree that there is no equivalency there. Remember he has only played 19 games and might still be trying to adjust.
Incorrect. By far only 61 players meet your criteria, and Jone is at 50th. That is, on average, about the second best PER on a team across NBA.
Jones has great potential. If you don't see it your not very good at looking at what a player is doing now and forecasting how he will and could improve. Last year he showed he deserved minutes and could start. Many games I attended and watched on TV he would look like he was one of the top players on the court. Dominating the opponent. He didn't just do it over 6 games he did it for chunks of each month. True, he would have stretches were he didn't show up. That inconsistency is called YOUTH. The more mature he gets mental and physically the more success and confidence he'll have night in and night out. Then the not showing up goes to a minimum. He already is a good finisher, good re-bounder, good passer, good shot blocker, and as a power forward a great ball handler. His turnovers are coming down and he is reading the passing lanes better than ever. If he becomes a good shooter then he'll be a top PF in the NBA. He will be in the league for several years baring injuries. Talk to me when he is 27-28 and his strength matches his experience and skills and I bet we are saying the guy is a really good PF maybe elite IF he is shooting 36% from the 3 point line (39% from the corner).
I think the 250 players thing is dumb HOWEVER lets remember Shved had a 19 PER..... PER is only so useful.... As a starter Jones has gone from 13 to 17 ppg 7 to 9 rpg and has 2.1bpg. all while shooting 58.5 from the field and 40 from 3. I would expect him to be low 50s from the field and 35ish from 3 by seasons end (maybe sag off a couple ppg as a result?). But it is still a nice step forward!!!!
This is why people make fun of you. He IS shooting 33% on the season.. in fact 40% as a starter. there are far uglier shooting strokes in the nba which are effective (see martin, kevin). Jones' isnt the worst. He does shoot left handed - perhaps you expect it to come out of his right???

Yeah, I just got done reading that and the 'bleacher report' story on him two days ago... Good stuff..
