Killed someone, got a year in jail.

Got to feel bad for this kid, since pretty much everyone does it. But it needed to be done. Hopefully this will stop at least a few people from texting and driving.

I was actually going to make a thread about texting and driving, even before this article. I witness countless times someone driving really slow, drifting in their lane, etc... I'll pull up next to them, and most the time they're on the phone texting or something. And, not to be sexist, well over 1/2 the time it's a young female.

If something's that important that it can't wait, call the damn people. Talking and driving might not be the safest thing in the world, but it's a million time better than texting. Bet that kid wishes he would have called the person, rather than texted.

Parents, if you know your kid has been driving for x minutes before getting home, spot check the cell and see if they texted in those last x minutes. If they have, take the phone and the car from them. Kids are dumb and dont think about consequences, parents need to get stricter about this... any parents out there (or kids for that matter) do anything like this?

Most phones already have voice to SMS. And there is talking with a call.

Or pulling over to send a message. Or waiting.

This is a GREAT feature, even when not driving. I think voice-texting will eventually take over.

Doubtful, you cant hold a private conversation when sending a text with your voice. It defeats the purpose of texting rather than picking up and calling.

He killed one person, severely injured another, all because he couldn't be bothered to pull over. Then, as if that weren't enough, he tried to cover it up.

Sorry, not too much sympathy coming from me.

The defense was probably one of the worse defenses I have ever heard.

That, and the phone companies have got to smooth that feature over big time. You say something and then your phone puts something down completely different.

Accidents are different than doing so with intentions.

Not at all. It's easier and faster to input text with voice than typing or swyping. It works on my phone very well at home or in the office. Eventually down the line, voice will replace typing with phones and maybe PCs.

The whole purpose of texting is to avoid a telephone conversation so you can divide your attention and reply back when you feel like it. Voice input is faster that thumbs. Did I miss your point?

I think he meant in public places. It would be strange to voice-text in a restaurant, at the bank, waiting in line, etc. But at home or in the car, I think voice messaging is a great idea.

Out of curiosity, but do lots of people really do this? I've never tired it and can't think of trying it besides sitting in traffic. I once tried holding a phone calling someone while driving, and found it a very dangerous experience. I can't imagine trying to text someone while driving.

It seems that either I really suck at multi-tasking, or there are some dangerous drivers out there.
