Is there an example of a player who was universally regarded as the team's best player or most important player while not being the 1st or 2nd option on offense?

Draymond is an important player for the Warriors but no way is he considered better than Curry or Durant.

In his prime with the Nets, Kidd was definitely 1st or 2nd scoring option. The stats bear this out.

    Bill Murray

    (OP doesn't specify NBA "players")

Ben Wallace was Detroit's franchise player for awhile.

Magic was the third leading scorer on a couple of Lakers' championship teams. His rookie year he was behind KAJ and Silk, later he was behind Worthy and Scott.

Steve Nash 2004-05 was the team's fourth leading scorer, numbers were very close to the 5th option Quentin.

Most times when it happens it's either a defensive specialist or a young player who still hasn't established himself and is surrounded by me first selfish scrubs.
For example Gobert , or Jokic and Porzingis last year.

No, I meant the SNL Comedy players. Akroyd and Belushi were 1 and 2 options when Murray arrived

Or a really good point guard who does not need to score, however knows how to shoot and elevates the game of his teammates.

Wes Unseld won the MVP averaging 13.8 PPG.

Bill Russell was clearly a secondary scoring option later in his career, yet was still clearly the anchor.

Spectacular defensive bigs have been historically extremely well respected.
