Yeah I would absolutely refuse to release him. If nothing else he can be a blitz specialist on 3rd downs. If he had some big cap number you wanted to save sure, but not on his rookie deal. Just no purpose. Unless he's a bad teammate and we just don't know it.
What?? How? Letting go of Andre, and trading away Posey and Swearinger hardly make him a Chip Kelly clone. Kelly has turned trading away productive members of your team into an art form.
Consider who you are replying to. Some people are "glass half empty" fans, some are "glass half full" fans......and then there are "There is no glass" type fans. With "There is no glass" type fans it's best to just shake your head and keep moving on.
Yes, but that identity is, "The Guy Who's Not Very Good at Football." BTW, not defending Rick Smith - Swearinger was a bad pick. But... it's not terribly uncommon for new regimes to shred the previous regime, for a variety of reasons - new systems, loyalty, different methods of evaluation, etc. It's highly possible, outside of Watt, Hopkins, Jackson, maybe Brown - that there won't be too many Kubiak-era Texans left when they hit the field in 2016. Cushing and Foster are likely gone, Joseph...
I'm guessing he is on everyone's s*** list right now. The guy who drafted him isn't here anymore, Romeo never seemed fond of the box safety, and his off-the-field behavior hasn't exactly been Eagle Scout. Even still, if they end up getting nothing for him, that's reeks of mismanagement by the FO. Should have had this deal done and executed weeks ago, esp before this leak. Now everyone is just waiting on their hands for him to hit waivers.
Chip likes certain players and player types and would rather have those types of guys in the locker room; regardless of their production. O'Brien isn't doing as much, he can't, but I get the feeling he is the same way.
Depth on special teams isn't a bad thing. Situational players aren't a bad thing. His contract is manageable.
Yeah, I think he has some kind of value on the field as a situational backup. And like others said, he isn't making any money, not sure why they would just dump him for nothing. I think this is an exaggeration. To my knowledge, DJ has never gotten in any kind of legal trouble. He's a different guy, but there is absolutely no evidence that he isn't a solid person. This seems to be a pure football decision.
Swerenger always seemed to be the second coming of Bernard Pollard, in that the highlight tape always got you pumped putting and ready to go, while the full game tape had as many "oh my god"s... as "OH MY GOD!!!"s... Net the Texans were happy to get rid of Pollard and his mistakes, while B-More and the Titans were happy for the attitude he brought. Win-win. BTW, Consensus is Swerenger was slightly over drafted. Entering the draft, after the senior bowl, he was discussed as a 3rd or 4th rounder. Usually teams cut players after the draft because they were able to find a cheaper replacement in the draft at their position. Are there any teams that entered the draft pretty solid at saftey that spent a high pick on a S that didn't totally make sense? The only other option I see flipping a big CB inside. My off the cuff value guess is a 4th rounder?

Probably a mix of O'Brien being stubborn + attitude problems. I'm fine with it but I feel like a lot of franchises could have found a way to get use out of him.
Obrien must have really disliked him. Brightside, less 15 yard personal fouls next season guaranteed!
sucks that we couldn't get something for him. But I'm happy he's gone. Which probably says something as to why we couldn't get something..
He obviously didn't like him. I like O'Brien as a coach right now. He still has a lot to prove though. But I do not like the way he seems to take the easy way out... The handling of Swearinger is a small issue. The handling of Johnson - that kind of grinds my gears. I LIKE the move to move on from him. But he didn't have to be a dick about it. "You'll catch 40 balls this year" - then you go out scrambling and draft two WR's and sign like 5 others to fill the void? If you're going to be a dick be a man and give a reasonable excuse. "You're aging," "we cant afford you." The way he handles some of these small situations isn't a big deal in a vacuum but they'll start to add up. Don't take the easy, ******* way out of everything. It makes you look like a b****. Let Swearinger b****. Coach him.
Who's left to bring in? In house: Cliet Lonie Balentine FA's: Bernard Pollard Daniel Manning Brandon Marriwether LaRon Landry I'm sure a few more but... ouch.
