Why would him be released instead of traded for scraps make it more pink-slip worthy. No matter how they dump him, it doesn't change the fact that a 2nd rd pick was spent on a safety who can't play safety.
No I get that, but if salvaging the pick for something later on doesn't mean you didn't blow it to begin with. Blowing the pick is the crime.
I just don't agree. DJ Swearinger is the same player regardless of whether he is cut or traded. Rick Smith shouldn't get less criticism for blowing a pick if he somehow turns a blown 2nd round pick into a special teams guy or something. He still blew the pick. Blowing the picks is the problem. Example, if I give you $100 and tell you to go invest it wisely and you lose all but a dollar of it in a card game, it doesn't make it any better if you then bring me a coke with that dollar. Yeah I got something for my $100, but you turned $100 into a coke.
New coaching regime gets Rick a pass, it can simply be implied that DJ was Wade's pick and he doesn't fit Romeo's scheme. And it reaffirms that Rick is just a bean counter for the team.
Rick is teflon No one know what he does. . . .so he cannot be blamed for anything Everytime they say . .. RICK DID THIS !!! He says no that is not my responsibility One days he gonna have to meet THE BOBS Mr. Smith . . . .. Rocket River

I honestly think OB and Brian Gaine are the head decision makers and Rick is just the voice of the team.
Maybe Rick is really good at writing contracts and crunching numbers. Like a glorified football accountant?
Box safeties aren't all that valuable. I'd just keep the guy. At least there's an identity to his game.
