Nothing annoys and scares the Russians as much as missile defense. Just tell the Russians that we are starting Star Wars back up and going whole hog on space based laser ABM.

If the Russians start b****ing about treaties, hand them a copy of the one that Yeltsin signed with Ukraine.

Well it is true the Russians could turn us into ash and vice versa.

It is actually important for arm chair warriors and tough guys to take this into account when fantasizing about war and foreign policy.

    This....

Putin and the Russians are extremely envious of the United States and their power and influence. I suppose running your mouth is easy when you have nothing to lose. It is a good distraction to the economic and social issues in Russia. The Ruskies can puff out their chests and feel proud, and maybe not notice their is no food on their table.

Yup...... malnutrition in Russia is still a huge problem.

Of course Putin doesn't discuss that, nor is it shown on television.

The difference is that the Russians are used to tragedy and suffering. They don't have much to lose and because of their historical political structure, they fail to think for themselves... they will gladly circle the drain for Putin if it comes to that.

To be fair to Putin, under his reign the Russian economy have experienced very rapid growth. In terms of per capita GDP, Russia is now richer than most of the Eastern European NATO & EU countries (Hungary, Poland, etc)

Having unofficial channels proposing hyperbolic threats defines the extremes and moves the centrist compromise solutions your way. It's just like letting John McCain threaten to invade in every situation. I read where this guy is a joke, like our own FAUX news in our country.

propaganda should be ignored, not legitimized

All of which was fueled by an energy boom, and the recent stagnation is due to it receding.

Hence diversionary tactics like this - it's no different than whatever Kim nutjob in NK blowing up nuclear bombs to divert from famine.

Does this mean they can remake that terrible re-make of Red Dawn and bring back the Russians?

The Russian economy is not in good shape, and sanctions would hit it extremely hard.

The Russians are currently consuming less dairy and meat than they did during the crisis of the 1930's. That is very damning. Many Russians are not even qualifying for military service because of malnutrition and health issues.

The ruble has lost 10% against the dollar just since January.

As far as Putin is concerned, he is not some miracle worker, and he has not worked over the West as is the narrative that he has pounded away with on his state television and through mass media. He inherited a nation with SERIOUS problems, and he has made progress on some fronts and made things worse on others.

Not saying he's a miracle worker, but give him some credit when its due.

Today how many country have an economy in good shape?

Also a depreciating ruble is not a bad thing. Central banks regularly depreciate their own currency to help stimulate the local economy and boost exports. (Fed's QE1,2 & 3, China& Japan & South Korea are regularly accused of depreciating their own currency etc).
