4 episodes in. The episodes/stories are interesting. Visuals/CGI are well done. Characters seem a bit wooden, underdeveloped and frankly not very interesting. Series lacks humor. Critics really seem to like it though. I'll keep watching though. Maybe this will grow into itself with time.
I feel the same. I find Discovery a far more interesting show yet people keep on pining for the same old and stale TOS/TNG formula and to never mess with established canon. That being said, it's been decent, pretty much in line with most ST out there, but not as entertaining or outstanding as some other ST shows both old and new.
Just wanted to bump this. This show is really good. Feels like a movie sometimes (quality wise) Actually makes me wanna go back and check out all the old Star Treks since alot of ppl say this show is rememicent of the classics. Nice.
The first season just finished, didn't it? Almost time for me to sign up for a free month of service or something and binge-watch the most recent seasons of SNW, Picard, and Discovery.
I honestly didn't think I'd like this show but after a few choppy episodes early on I really warmed up to it. Very classic Trek feel to it, more episodic overall. Appreciate how they have recreated the look of the original Enterprise but modernized it as well, looking forward to next season....
I absolutely loved the season finale playing off of what we know eventually happens to Captain Pike. Very cool.
Just curious. For all you Trek fans out there. Me and the lady didn't get into Star Trek until the reboot came along with 2009. After hearing reviews of Strange New Worlds, we were sucked right in. Where do we go from here? I assume the original TV series then go to the films. Wanna check out Discovery but I understand its somewhat of a prequel. Where should we start?
Every episode is infused with a healthy dose of handwavium. They don't even have to stick fish in their ears.
I would get Paramount Plus. It has all the Trek. I would start like this: The Original Series (including Unaired Pilot). Movies: Star Trek: The Motion Picture Strar Trek: The Wrath of Khan Star Trek: 3 Search for Spock Star Trek 4: Voyage Home Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country Then Star Trek: The Next Generation Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Last 4 season are the Best Trek ever) Movie: Star Trek Generations (This movie takes place while DS9 is airing. There may be a small reference to DS9...may be watch it after season 2 of DS9....really doesn't matter). Movie: Star Trek: First Contact (still the best movie. Watch this after Season 4 of DS9 because of a character who is on DS9, but is in this movie). Star Trek Voyager (Series) Movies: Nemesis and Insurrection (both are a little blah, but Insurrection is important to Star Trek: Picard series). Star Trek: Enterprise (Series....founding of The Federation). Then Star Trek: Discovery Star Trek: Picard Star Trek Strange New Worlds You can watch the animated Lower Decks and Prodigy along with the new series. The Reboot Movies with Chris Pine are the Kelvin Timeline. There is a scene involving Kirk's father in first movie that basically creates the alternate timeline. There is actually another one of those movies in the works.
Thanks man. I know alot of us talk mess on here alot when it comes to sports but this hangout thread has always been informative to me. This is a big reason why cause of cool talk like this. Cheers buddy.
The universal translator doesn't work for 1 species...if I remember correctly in Strange New Worlds. There is an episode of Discovery where the Universal Translator goes off-line for all the species on the ship and they are talking in their native languages..including Humans (French, English, etc).
I didn't realize there was an ex Machina...ism for language in ST lore. Makes sense. What doesn't make sense is Klingons referencing Shakespeare.
It's a good series. There's more investment in the characters and letting Pike deal with his future gives him gravity. Yeah, none of the shows explain how the lips don't match or how it transmits voice...or how it knows metaphor/poetry/inside references. Maybe it gets google to search though alien internet and download a dictionary of all the things?
The Original Series said it was done thru the hand-held communicators or thru a ship's computer. Later, thru the com-badges that were worn on the chest. Stargate TV shows implied that the Gate system implanted Nanites into the travelers for universal communication. As for Klingons and Shakespeare, Earth literature was available to Klingons. Some enjoyed Shakespeare.
Earth literature was available to Klingons either thru cultural exchange or thru the capture of Star Fleet vessels. It was studied. Oh come on, the lips thing is a little creative license. You are not going to spend episodes exploring the lip-syncing not being correct.
