This still makes sense to me. The Rockets are not done trying to get Dwight Howard. If they can get their hands on Howard, they can immediately start signing established veterans. This doesn't have to be a black or white, rebuilding or not rebuilding situation. When you have the cap space to make big moves, you can do things like what Miami did.

As for the Rockets, they’re clearly after a star at all costs. One suspects they did their diligence in taking the league’s temperature and discovered that the first-round pick they just received from the Raptors is a more valuable trade asset than Lowry — a player who admittedly clashed with coaches in Memphis and Houston. Lowry is a known commodity; a first-round pick has the allure of the unknown. Still: Lowry is so valuable under this contract that I wonder if the league is wrong, or perhaps if Houston is misreading the league.

Houston adds another pick here, which puts it at plus-one in future first-rounders: It has a pick coming from Dallas (via the Lakers) and another going to Brooklyn (via the Terrence Williams deal). The Rockets also have a pile of first- and second-year forwards, plus Kevin Martin’s expiring contract, an intriguing rookie guard in Jeremy Lamb and a ton of present and future cap space. Even if they do get Omer Asik from Chicago for $8 million per year, Houston could spend this entire season right at the minimum payroll floor of about $49 million — with enough space to swallow a contract linked to Orlando’s Glen Davis or Jason Richardson as the Rockets chase Dwight Howard. Signing Lin away from New York would obviously change that. And next summer, they could have as little as $31 million in committed money for 2013-14, more than enough cap space for two mammoth deals (one max, one near-max).

This is the plan in Houston: a star or bust, plus some height and defense (Asik), since that is another necessity for every championship-caliber team without LeBron James. It’s no coincidence Dallas vaulted to the title the year that Tyson Chandler was hanging around. It’s a plan, and one that will result in some unpleasantness. But, then again, it might work.

This much is clear: Houston is going all-in , for better or worse. They are tired of being a borderline playoff team, and this Lowry deal proves it.

The article gives me hope. I don't know about y'all but it's been too long since our championship years and I don't want to see us rebuild. This team still has talent to build around.

Not sure that I agree.

Unless Morey pulls Dwight + another middling star player one swoop (ala Nene/Gasol), Im not sure how it could be done.

Howard + _________ ???

Our PG position has been decimated. Unless we nab a Session and bring back Lee, we don't have enough players to make this work.

What's the pointing in renting Howard when we don't have guys surrounding him that will make the team a contender? No way would he resign with us if the current team we have assembled.

Walk away from that money and if we did conceivably get Dwight all Morry has to do is call his bluff... If he walks for less money, it won't be to Brooklyn because of their cap situation..

They can only make it work Via trade

Take a chance.... He is weak minded and could be convinced... the other cap space teams in 2013 to compete with us would be Dallas and a few other irrelevant franchises....

so either Walk away to Dallas for less money and an aging Dirk with little supporting cast or..

Take max money here and trust in Mauery to build around you?? 50-50 IMO

Precisely. The desperation to land a malcontent who has openly pined to be in Brooklyn or bust and is also a known coach killer outweighs the positives IMO. Not to mention there is no one to pair with him here

If we trade for dwight, you can bet a lot more players will be traded or signed. Morey wouldn't just stand still with Dwight and 30 assets. Remember, the hard part is getting the big fish, after that its easier to flip the assets. Im not very optimistic on getting DH, but that would be the plan..

like i said...moves would be made. Again, im personally not very optimistic the plan will unfold like Morey expects or wants it to, but i understand what he's trying to do. The focus is on getting Dwight right now. We will have some talent, even if we trade for him. Solid role guys, but not totally stripped down. Morey is likely going to try and clear up more space to go after CP, smith, millsap, etc (2013 FA class), in addition to resigning Dwight.

We're slowly becoming the only option for Dwight, well for the Magic. once you get dwight, you put up with his **** this season and then promise him the moon next offseason. Again, at least that seems to be the plan.

It seems like the Magic didnt want lowry, for whatvr reason....rockets trade for a semi-high pick, which may be what the Magic want. Not all teams want established players, even good ones. Sometimes they want options and freedom to pick themselves.

People forget that the Rockets once traded four players--including Robert Horry and Sam Cassell--for Charles Barkley.

People also forget that we went 57-25 our first year with him--one win shy of the franchise record.

It's not over.
