Spoelstra Gets Contract Extension

Another potential 2012 free agent is off the market. The Miami Heat, concerned he might attract interest from other teams and pleased with his performance, signed coach Erik Spoelstra to a contract extension Friday.

Spoelstra, 41, was entering the last year of his deal after leading the Heat to the NBA Finals last season. Despite intense scrutiny the past year since LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami, Spoelstra has created a strong reputation within the league.

"We have one of the great young coaches in the league and (he) is an absolute member of this family," Heat president Pat Riley said. "He's the perfect coach for this team now. The reason why we did it was to extend him and keep him in the family and (not) have somebody come steal him away from us.

I think coach Spo is one of the better young coaches in the league, along with coach Monty Williams and that dude from the Thunder. I think extending him was the right move, even though he was young he wasn't dominated by Lebron and Wade.

The Heat had to do this. No way they could have him coach the season as a lame duck.

When you have lebron and wade he just needs to roll the ball out and let them play and hope lebron doesn't choke.
