The fatty didn't pay for two-seats.

    Kick 'em off.

whoever repped me and called me "horrible" for saying this...why? he/she had only purchased one ticket. just cause he/she's a kid (and not even that young...14) they are exempt from the rules?

i know i know, it was standby... i still don't see why it was such a cut-and-dry decision.

It was the elephant in the room.

re: the fatty row, maybe airlines can place scales to qualify. Some intrepid penny pincher could also use the luggage scales.

Do you know that the kid's problem is not genetic?

I'm betting there certainly is a genetic element but I strongly suspect that lifestyle is contributing to the kid's size. Genetics can lead to a predilection to a large size but I suspect it is very rare for that alone to lead to morbid obesity.

either way they were hosed the moment this situation arose.

Kick off the "big" 14 year old kid who's flying alone and endure the $#@!storm that ensues after the last "Big Passenger" debacle, or tell the standby guy that he'll have to wait for another flight because of him?

One thing worth considering, seems maybe they let the standby guy on too soon (or the bigun on too late) if they had to tell skinny guy "Oh, sorry, you were standby and here comes this big kid that will need both of these seats. Ummm eeny meeney miney hosed." How late was this kid? Or how early did they let the standby guy on. I'm sure he was irritated that they'd let him on and THEN kicked him off, moreso than if they had just not had a seat for him.

This was pretty much lose lose from the get go.

They do. It's called first class.

Oh wait, SWA doesn't have that option.

He was standby and the other passenger who needed the seat was not. Seems pretty cut and dry.

And add in that the kid was 14, and they gave a flight credit to the bumped standby adult for waiting an hour for the next flight and they seem to have done the right thing.

What he paid for the seat, or how many he bought are between him and the airline's accountants. Not everyone on the plane pays the same. When the big kid showed up, the extra seat was no longer available.

Next issue....should the fat kid get two lunches since he's got two seats?:

At least the thin person is being compensated.

I'm just horrified that someone would need two seats.

You know, I've never had any problems flying. I only fly a few times per year, so maybe I've just been lucky up to now. I've never had my luggage lost, I've never been stuck on a plane on the ground for six hours, and I've never been treated rudely by an airline employee. The service I receive in many restaurants is far worse than the service I've received by airlines. I'm sure if I was flying every week I would have a few horror stories to tell.

that question was just so i could use "fat chance"

I've had a few mishaps here and there, but the majority of the time flying has been ok

If you find out the kid is genetically fat . . . does it change your opinion?

Well, you can't just weighve your seat to allow the big passenger room. They have to pay extra
